Aerodyne Industries is currently seeking a Sr. Project Staff Engineer to join our team supporting the Habitable Worlds Observatory project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. At GSFC, Aerodyne Industries provides engineering services for the branches within the Mechanical Systems Division of the GSFC Applied Engineering and Technology Directorate (AETD) as well as for many flight projects.

The position includes the following duties in support of Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) project at NASA GSFC; for all duties, the role includes lead/mentor as well as individual contributor functions.

  • Support overall system architecture and mechanical system design development for early HWO concept designs with focus on on-orbit servicing, to include scenarios for on-orbit assembly, refueling, science instrument removal/replacement, and spacecraft subsystems replacement
  • Collaborate with the mission systems team and other engineering disciplines to develop and refine system architectures as well as sub-systems and components to support servicing
  • Design mechanical interfaces to facilitate servicing such as servicing module approach and docking interfaces, robotic interfaces, electrical connections, avionics integrations, and science instrument latches; this includes design and analysis, trade studies, and risk assessments
  • Support mission planning and operations concepts development for servicing scenarios; develop scale mockups of early EAC designs to demonstrate servicing architectures and CONOPS
  • Collaborate with NASA and industry Subject Matter Experts to survey state-of-the-art on-orbit servicing capabilities and implementations with focus on applicability to HWO


Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 20 years of experience in mechanical engineering with positions in both individual contributor and lead roles, to include prior experience in design, fabrication, and AI&T of space-qualified mechanical components, sub-systems, and systems; prior flight project experience involving on-orbit servicing operations for space telescopes; and prior experience developing CONOPS for on-orbit servicing missions
  • Proficiency with CAD software tools, Creo preferred
  • Familiarity with aerospace robotics and automated servicing systems
  • Familiarity with NASA engineering standards and processes
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution in mechanical engineering or related field
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment and communicate effectively with colleagues (written and oral)
