Accounting Manager Job Description

As a Staff Accountant at Financial Affairs, you will play a critical role in our dynamic team, supporting our clients through meticulous accounting practices and insightful financial reporting. This position offers the opportunity to work remotely, engaging directly with nonprofit leaders to enhance their financial operations and contribute to their success.

Primary job responsibilities

Serve as an in-charge accountant on selected engagements - includes being the primary point of contact for client questions; requires understanding of client operations, interpersonal dynamics, and mission. Also includes:

  • Assisting clients with budget preparation, audit prep, grant reports, compliance advice, internal controls, etc. as needed
  • Preparing interim and year-end close workpapers
  • Compiling financial statements
  • Reviewing bookkeeping performed by client staff or ours
  • Responding to questions from clients about a variety of nonprofit accounting topics, such as:
  • Functional expense accounting
  • Coding expenses to grants
  • Determining independent contractor vs. employee status
  • Analyzing general ledger
  • Designing accounting database structure
  • Support the firm’s Associate Accountant and perform some bookkeeping services directly
  • Collaborate with other in-charge accountants in the firm
  • Provide hands-on QuickBooks training and troubleshooting for clients
  • Review year-end close and other workpapers prepared by other team members
  • Manage self-administration tasks (time reports, work plan updates, etc.)
  • Other duties as may be assigned

Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • At least three years’ nonprofit accounting experience
  • Experience preparing IRS Form 990 preferred
  • Experience working with nonprofits
  • Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP
  • Strong knowledge of Excel and QuickBooks
  • Basic familiarity with payroll compliance and regulations
  • Superior accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to self-motivate, work independently and as part a team
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong time management skills and ability to keep track of many tasks that require follow-up
  • Willingness and ability to give and receive critical feedback with generosity of spirit and openness to learning
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Sense of humor

Logistics

  • Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience (range $54k – 65k)
  • The position is full-time
  • We offer a flexible, remote work environment but some office work is required
  • You have your own computer, mobile phone, and internet access
  • You maintain a workspace free of unnecessary distractions where client and internal calls may be taken in a professional manner
  • You are able to be on video chat for scheduled meetings
  • Monday – Friday, No weekends

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
