POSITION PURPOSE
The Certified Welder will use hand-welding or flame cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Weld steel components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Secure material, lay out parts, confirm measurements, position and align per drawings prior to welding the assemblies using straight edges, combination squares, calipers, rulers and/or measuring tape.
- Examine welds for defects and measure workpieces/assemblies with straight edges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
- Identify basic welding symbols and read their location significance.
- Apply correct welding practices.
- Proper storage and safe handling of welding gasses.
- Inform the Steel Fab Manager and/or Maintenance of issues needing attention.
- Perform daily maintenance on welding equipment and inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment as needed.
- Read blueprints/tickets to establish production needs and demands for the day.
- Weld assemblies as assigned in order to keep up with production department needs.
- Maintain and troubleshoot assigned equipment.
- Operate steel fab equipment as needed or certified.
- Must adhere to all Metromont and OSHA safety rules and regulations.
- Housekeeping as necessary to maintain work area, tools, and equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
SCOPE OF AUTHORITY
- Reports to the Steel Fab Manager
- This position has no supervisory duties
- Must be able to work independently with little supervision as well as on a team
- Mentor new or less experienced welders as assigned by the Steel Fab Manager
CHARACTERISTICS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- Solid understanding of welding and steel fabrication
- Basic reading, writing; intermediate math skills (algebra)
- Able to read measuring tape to 1/16th inch and work with fractions
- Strong knowledge of the standard tools and equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the welding trade. Control precision.
- Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
- Critical thinker and self-motivated
- Able to adapt to changes in work schedules, tasks, or processes
EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred
- Previous welding experience preferred
- Welding certification preferred (AWS approved establishment or can be certified)
WORK ENVIRONMENT / SCHEDULE
- Monday-Friday
- Schedule varies with workload and location
- Unscheduled overtime may be required depending on production needs
- Indoor sheltered
- Work area is not climate controlled and may be exposed to changing weather and temperature conditions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires standing for long periods of time, frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs.) and bending, repetitive motion with medium force, and an ability to frequently climb up to 3 feet above ground using
stairs.
