Job Description

Core responsibilities
  • Read and interpret plans:
    Understand construction blueprints and technical drawings to determine the placement and type of steel needed.
  • Prepare and place steel:
    Cut, shape, and bend steel bars and mesh to the correct specifications using hand and power tools.
  • Assemble reinforcement:
    Tie, clip, or weld steel bars and mesh together to create the required structure.
  • Secure the structure:
    Position and fix the steel reinforcement in the concrete forms, ensuring it is stable and aligned correctly.
  • Inspect work:
    Check that the installed steel meets all the project's specifications for strength, alignment, and stability.
  • Maintain equipment:
    Keep tools and equipment used for steel fixing in good working condition.
Collaboration and environment
  • Work as part of a construction team, often on sites with other construction workers, engineers, and steel erectors.
  • May also work in factory settings for pre-cast components.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions.

  • Physical fitness:
    The strength and stamina to lift and carry heavy steel bars and other materials.
Manual dexterity:
The ability to work well with hands to tie, cut, and bend steel with precision.
Working at heights:
Confidence and safety awareness when working on tall structures.

Reading and interpreting technical plans:
The ability to understand and follow engineering drawings and specifications to ensure correct placement and alignment.

Precision is crucial, as a misplaced bar can compromise the entire structure.

The ability to adapt and make on-the-spot decisions when plans change or issues arise.
