Dakota State University is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Strategic Communications Coordinator to help tell our story with clarity, consistency, and impact. This position is responsible for developing and executing effective communication strategies to advance Dakota State University’s mission, vision, and values. This role requires a strong understanding of the university’s strategic goals and the ability to translate them into compelling narratives for both internal and external audiences. The successful candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, a keen understanding of media relations, and a passion for storytelling.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Planning and Execution:

Develop and implement comprehensive communication plans aligned with university goals.

Collaborate with university stakeholders to identify communication needs and opportunities.

Utilize appropriate software and platforms to disseminate information and conduct regular data analysis to inform strategies and measure campaign effectiveness.
Content Development and Management:
-
Write, edit, and proofread a variety of content, including press releases, feature stories, website copy, social media posts, and other materials.

When appropriate, work alongside internal and external stakeholders to develop compelling multimedia content, such as videos, podcasts, and infographics.

Ensure all content aligns with the university’s brand voice and messaging guidelines.
Media Relations and Crisis Management:

Build and maintain strong relationships with media contacts.

Develop and execute proactive media outreach strategies.

Respond to media inquiries in a timely and professional manner.

Collaborate with stakeholders to develop, revise and implement crisis communication plans.
Brand Management and Digital Engagement:

Develop and manage the university’s brand identity and reputation.

Utilize data analytics to measure brand performance and audience engagement.

Leverage social media and other digital platforms to connect with audiences.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.

Minimum of one year of experience in strategic communications, public relations, or related field.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including adherence to AP style.

Strong project management and organizational skills.

Experience with content distribution software and social media best practices.

Experience with multimedia content creation and production.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
