The City of Sacramento’s Public Works Department, Division of Mobility and Sustainability, is seeking a Student Assistant to join the Office of Climate Action & Sustainability. This team leads the implementation of the City’s ambitious Climate Implementation Work Plan (CIWP) and Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), advances Sacramento’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045, and fosters centralized climate leadership across the City organization. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.


Conditions of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.


Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

All participants must be between 16-30 years of age and residents of the City of Sacramento.


Majors/Fields of Study

Engineering, Policy or studies focusing on tackling climate change through science or Urban Planning.


Work Schedule

Flexible hours, part-time Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional participation in evening meetings for notetaking or assistance as needed. Final work to be determined by supervisor.

Telecommuting is supported for this team; however, in-person work may be required. All work conducted remotely via telecommuting requires a reliable and stable internet connection.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).


Compensation

$17.00-$20.00 an h o ur


Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey complex information and support analytical work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with environmental issues, sustainability concepts, and climate-related policy.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze information, and summarize findings effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment.
  • Interest in climate action, sustainability, public policy, environmental management, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the public, including community outreach, stakeholder engagement, or preparing communications related to sustainability, environmental issues, or climate action.
  • Prior experience developing outreach materials, presentations, or public-facing content on environmental or sustainability topics.
  • Upper-division undergraduate or graduate student status, particularly in fields related to sustainability, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, urban planning, community engagement, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated interest in climate action, environmental justice, or community-focused sustainability work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of the City’s Climate Implementation Work Plan (CIWP) and related climate action tasks.
  • Assist in developing sustainability-focused outreach and engagement materials.
  • Conduct community outreach and engagement to advance the City’s climate goals.
  • Perform research, data analysis, and policy support related to climate action and sustainability initiatives.
  • Contribute to communications efforts, including content creation and general program support.
  • Collaborate with staff on climate-related projects that promote Citywide sustainability and carbon-reduction strategies.
  • Participate in part-time, hands-on work that provides exposure to climate action, sustainability practices, and local government operations.
  • Gain practical experience relevant to fields such as sustainability, environmental management, public policy, public administration, community engagement, urban planning, advocacy, and environmental justice.
  • Receive on-the-job instruction and professional guidance while contributing to meaningful climate and sustainability initiatives.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions

W ork is performed in an office environment.

Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
