Summer Camp Assistant (Childcare Program)

This is a seasonal position expected to run from May 18, 2026 - July 24, 2026 with 1 additional recap day on August 3, 2026

Position Summary:

The Summer Camp Assistant in our Childcare Program will be responsible for assisting in a therapeutic classroom environment in the Compass Kids Program at the Center for Women and Children or Cornerstone Lutheran Church. This individual will support children in the elementary or middle school age groups and play a crucial role in providing a nurturing and supportive environment for them.

Full or Part-time: Temporary – 28 hours

Team: Center for Women and Children (CWC)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Brief description of duties in order of priority

Key Area: Teaching and Support

  • Assist in a therapeutic classroom environment within the Compass Kids Program at the Center for Women and Children or Cornerstone Lutheran Church.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and Christ-centered approaches.
  • Use evidence-based curriculum and sensory tools in educational activities.
  • Communicate effectively and clearly with children, parents, coworkers, and volunteers.

Key Area: Program Support

  • Ensure the program meets the needs of the children in a Christ-centered, strengths-focused, and trauma-informed manner.
  • Implement summer programming as directed through best practice standards of social emotional learning and Indiana Afterschool Standards with the utilization of sensory support.
  • Provide daily communication to parents as well as Compass Kids staff outlining daily events.
  • Adherence to all policies and procedures of Wheeler Mission, Center for Women and Children, and Indiana Code.
  • Participate in staff meetings and meetings with Compass Kids Program Managers as requested.

This position will not have direct reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Must have 1+ years of experience working with young children.
  • Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Experience working within a school or family recovery setting (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of children who have been impacted by trauma, poverty and/or homelessness (preferred)

Technical/Software Knowledge:

  • Above average knowledge in Microsoft Outlook
  • Ability to learn HRIS software (Paycom) as well as other software necessary

Physical Requirements:

This person must be able to carry out the required job duties in a fast-paced Christ Centered environment that is grace-based, and strengths focused.

To perform the essential job functions of this position, a candidate must be able to:

· Lift a 10–30-pound child, using all safety precautions

· Stand, sit, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and play with infants, toddlers, or young children for long periods of time.

· Conduct activities both indoors and outdoors, weather permitting.

Other Requirements for Employment

· Availability to work 28 hours per week: Monday through Friday, with shift times varying between 7am to 6pm.

· Occasional travel may be required for field trips.

· Background check, fingerprints, physical, and TB test will be required for this position.
