DESCRIPTION: The Summer Day Camp Counselor will work at our main location at 9875 Aviary Drive, San Diego, CA 92131 within the Youth Programs Department. Camp Counselor supervises children in kindergarten - eighth grade, or entering kindergarten-eighth grade during camp activities, prepares and implements daily projects, games, activities, and snacks, and is responsible for following sign-in and sign-out procedures. The Camp Counselor may be responsible for transporting students using a company vehicle, supervising transportation in a company vehicle, and/or walking students to/from activity locations. This position may take on specialized tasks or roles within their position as needed within the department, and will assist in other departments as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Junior Camp Counselor: 16 years of age or older. Camp Counselor: 18 years of age or older and 21 years of age or older for positions requiring the operation of company vehicles.
  • No prior experience necessary. Experience coaching youth sports, babysitting, and leading groups of youth preferred.
  • Valid Adult/Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or another EMSA recognized provider
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, classroom management and behavior management techniques a plus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensures proper sign-in and sign-out procedures are followed
  • Maintains proper ratios according to American Camp Association and departmental requirements
  • Performs first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed, to the extent of certification and trained ability
  • Supervise program participants at all times
  • Uses proper recording in maintenance logs, vehicle mileage logs, incident reports, medication logs, and all other department and facility written documentation
  • Attends in-service training and meetings
  • General housekeeping of program space and food preparation
  • Communicate with parents, participants, peers, and supervisors effectively
  • Interact and engage with children in a consistent, fair, and positive manner, while treating them with dignity and respect
  • Perform work safely and follow all safety procedures outlined by the department and facility
  • Provide customer service to participants and parents, and handle concerns and complaints in a professional manner
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision on assigned tasks and as part of a team
  • May drive an SRSRC vehicle to transport program participants (requires a valid CA driver’s license and a clean driving record)
  • Assist in other departments and special events as needed

PHYSICAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Variable weather conditions, may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids when rendering first aid or CPR, may be required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, and holidays
  • Equipment used: Vacuum, basic food preparation equipment, leaf blower
  • Must have the mobility to climb, stoop, reach, and bend over, must have the visual and auditory ability to monitor participants and physical ability to respond in emergency situations, must be able to communicate verbally to participants to ensure safety, must be able to read and write proficiently to perform duties and reporting tasks, and must be able to perform work that may involve lifting children with or without assistance in emergency situations.
