Summer Intern - Credit Risk Analytics (Omaha, NE)

Summary of the Job:

The Intern role is accountable to develop core skills and working knowledge of FNBO business practices and operations through educational sessions, straightforward projects, and other duties requested by the manager.

This role supports the Credit Risk team in advancing data-driven underwriting and portfolio management strategies across the credit card & unsecured lending business. The intern will work closely with Risk, Finance, and Marketing partners to analyze portfolio performance, identify emerging trends, and contribute to disciplined growth initiatives.
About This Role:

Portfolio Monitoring & Insight Generation
  • Support ongoing tracking of key credit risk metrics including delinquency, charge-offs, approval rates, and utilization trends
  • Perform cohort and segmentation analysis (e.g., by FICO band, vintage, partner program) to identify performance patterns
  • Highlight emerging trends and areas of potential risk or opportunity
Data Extraction, Preparation & Validation
  • Extract and prepare large datasets from internal systems
  • Build structured datasets for analysis (feature tables, cohort views, test/control samples)
  • Validate data integrity and reconcile discrepancies across sources
Risk Segmentation & Performance Analysis
  • Analyze customer segments to assess differences in credit performance and behavior
  • Support identification of segments where risk-adjusted returns may diverge from expectations
  • Assist in framing insights to inform underwriting and line management strategies
Strategy & Test Evaluation
  • Support analysis of credit strategy tests (e.g., approval thresholds, pricing tiers, line assignment changes)
  • Compare performance across test and control groups to assess impact on risk and profitability
  • Summarize findings into clear, actionable insights
Automation & Process Improvement
  • Develop Python-based tools and scripts to automate recurring data processing and reporting tasks
  • Improve efficiency and consistency of existing analytical workflows
  • Create reusable notebooks and documentation for team use
The Ideal Candidate for This Role:

  • Must be a current university student or recent graduate with pursuing a degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Possess leadership skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Candidates must possess unrestricted work authorization and not require future sponsorship.
Work Environment:
It is anticipated that the incumbent in this role will work in a hybrid capacity, balancing in-person collaboration three (3) days a week with remote flexibility two (2) days a week.
