Technical Project Manager — Job Description

About the role

Lead technical projects from planning through delivery, coordinating engineering, product, QA, and stakeholders to deliver software or infrastructure initiatives on time, on scope, and within budget.

Key responsibilities

  • Own project planning: scope, schedule, resource allocation, milestones, and risk registers.
  • Translate technical requirements into clear work plans and break down tasks for engineering teams.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams (engineering, product, design, QA, DevOps) to ensure alignment and timely delivery.
  • Facilitate Agile ceremonies (Sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives) and adapt methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, hybrid) to team needs.
  • Track project progress, manage dependencies, remove blockers, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Maintain and communicate project status, timelines, and trade-offs to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Manage scope changes, prioritize work, and negotiate timelines with product and engineering leads.
  • Drive release planning, deployment coordination, and post-release verification.
  • Maintain project documentation: plans, requirements, decision logs, runbooks, and post‑mortems.
  • Implement risk mitigation, contingency plans, and conduct post‑incident/project retrospectives.
  • Optimize delivery processes, tooling, and metrics (velocity, cycle time, burn-down, delivery predictability).
  • Mentor and coach team members on delivery best practices and project execution.

Required qualifications

  • 3+ years managing technical projects or programs (software development, infrastructure, or platform projects).
  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, CI/CD, version control, testing, and deployment practices.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and tools (JIRA, Asana, ClickUp, or similar).
  • Proven ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience handling cross-team dependencies and complex delivery schedules.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or related field.
  • Technical background (former engineer, DevOps, or systems experience) or familiarity with common stacks (web services, APIs, cloud platforms).
  • Certifications: PMP, Scrum Master (CSM/PSM), or Agile Coach credentials.
  • Experience with program management at scale, vendor/third‑party integrations, and distributed teams.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure, cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), observability tooling, and security/compliance considerations.
