Client Controller

Location: Remote Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time

Reporting Structure

Reports To: Client CFO Provides Technical Oversight To: Client Service Managers (CSMs)

The Client Controller reports to the Client CFO and serves as the firm’s technical authority on accounting accuracy and tax matters.

While the Client CFO leads advisory strategy and team performance management, the Client Controller maintains final authority over accounting determinations and tax technical decisions.

The Controller provides technical performance input to the Client CFO regarding the accuracy and quality of CSM work.

Position Summary

The Client Controller is responsible for ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of all client financial data.

This role reviews and approves bookkeeping and accounting work prepared by Client Service Managers, oversees tax preparation and tax planning strategy, and safeguards the firm’s technical standards.

The Controller ensures that all financial information used for client advisory purposes is accurate, compliant, and defensible.

Workflow & Role Alignment

  • The CSM produces all bookkeeping and accounting work.
  • The Client Controller reviews and approves financial statements for accuracy and completeness.
  • The Controller maintains final authority over accounting accuracy and tax matters.
  • Once approved, financials are delivered to the Client CFO for advisory interpretation and strategy.
  • The Controller collaborates with the CFO to align tax positioning with broader business strategy.

Key Responsibilities1. Accounting Accuracy & Financial Review

  • Review financial statements prepared by CSMs for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Ensure proper account classifications, reconciliations, and documentation standards.
  • Identify discrepancies and provide corrective guidance.
  • Approve finalized financials prior to advisory distribution.
  • Maintain and improve accounting SOPs and documentation standards.
  • Delegate technical tasks appropriately while maintaining review authority.

2. Tax Compliance & Strategy (Technical Authority)

  • Prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for business and individual clients.
  • Lead tax planning strategies aligned with client business structures.
  • Prepare tax projections and advisory tax calculations.
  • Compute and apply applicable tax credits.
  • Oversee e-filing processes and ensure timely submission.
  • Ensure timely tax payments.
  • Manage multi-state filing requirements and Nexus considerations.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and adjust client strategy accordingly.
  • Ensure financial records comply with current tax regulations.

The Client Controller maintains final authority over tax technical determinations.

3. Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Serve as internal resource on complex accounting and tax matters.
  • Provide technical coaching to CSMs to improve accuracy and consistency.
  • Participate in performance evaluation discussions by providing technical input to the Client CFO.
  • Conduct internal training sessions to keep the team current on tax and accounting developments.
  • Support firm-wide quality control standards.

4. Client Consultation (Tax & Technical Matters)

  • Communicate tax strategies and compliance requirements clearly to clients.
  • Provide informed tax guidance tailored to each client’s structure.
  • Collaborate with the Client CFO during strategic client discussions when tax expertise is required.
  • Build professional, trust-based client relationships.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • EA or CPA preferred (minimum CTEC license required).
  • Minimum 3 years of accounting experience with strong emphasis on tax for small businesses.
  • Comprehensive understanding of current tax laws and accounting standards.
  • Experience working in a fully remote, paperless environment.
  • Proficiency in cloud-based systems (QBO, Proconnect, CRM platforms, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of digital security best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.

Pay: $72,262.35 - $89,724.55 per year
