Position Summary
The Tax Manager/Reviewer owns the firm's tax department end to end: reviewing and signing off on all individual and business returns, managing the flow of work from preparers to filing, and ensuring returns go out accurately and on time. This role is created specifically to take day-to-day tax production and review off the owner's plate, allowing the owner to focus on client relationships and firm growth. You will be the final technical checkpoint on every return and the person staff come to with hard questions.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and approve individual (1040) and business (1120, 1120-S, 1065) tax returns prepared by staff, ensuring technical accuracy and completeness before filing.
- Own the tax department's workflow: track return status across the team, manage deadlines/SLAs, and keep returns moving so nothing stalls in queue, especially during peak season.
- Directly manage and mentor tax preparers, including an onshore preparer and an offshore preparer handling business returns, providing technical guidance and feedback on their work.
- Research and resolve complex or unusual tax issues, and serve as the go-to technical resource for the tax team.
- Communicate with clients on technical tax matters escalated from preparers, and represent the firm professionally in tax-related client conversations.
- Monitor team capacity and workload during tax season and proactively flag bottlenecks or staffing needs to the owner.
- Stay current on federal and state tax law changes and ensure the department's practices reflect current requirements.
- Support onboarding and training as the tax team grows.
Qualifications
- Active CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) license required.
- 5+ years of tax experience in public accounting, including experience at the review level (not just preparation).
- Strong working knowledge of individual and business tax returns (1040, 1120, 1120-S, 1065); multi-state experience a plus.
- Proven ability to manage volume — this role oversees roughly 300-400 returns per year across the team.
- Experience managing or mentoring preparers, including comfort coordinating with an offshore team member.
- Proficiency with professional tax software (e.g., UltraTax, Drake, Lacerte, or similar) and general workflow/practice management tools.
- Excellent organization and communication skills; comfortable owning deadlines without close oversight.
What Success Looks Like
- Returns are reviewed and filed on time, with minimal errors or amendments.
- The owner is no longer needed for day-to-day tax review or production decisions.
- Preparers are improving over time and the department can absorb more volume without a proportional increase in owner involvement.
