Summary/Objective

The Substitute Teacher supervises students in the event the classroom teacher is unavailable to lead class. Their duties include managing classroom behavior, following lesson plans, and informing the classroom teacher following an assignment.

Essential Functions

  • For short-term substitutes: Follow provided lesson plans to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students.
  • For long-term substitutes: Develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with past lesson plans in keeping with student needs and abilities.
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student.
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom.
  • Builds a positive and ongoing professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents/guardians, special service personnel, support staff, administrators, and visitors.
  • Performs other duties on an as-needed basis as determined by their supervisor.
  • Attend trainings and meetings provided by the school and Summit Academy Management.

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of student records and school business
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills
  • Must assist in remaining in compliance in matters monitored at the school, state, and federal level as appropriate.

This position takes place during normal operating hours while students are present.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • Minimum of Valid and Current Substitute Teaching License Required
  • Classroom experience is Preferred
  • Appropriate criminal records check by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation
