A Tender Estimation Engineer in building construction evaluates project requirements, calculates the total cost of materials, labor, equipment, and subcontracts. They play a vital role in preparing competitive, technically compliant, and profitable bid proposals.
Core Responsibilities
1. Tender Analysis & Quantity Take-offs
- Review project drawings, specifications, and Tender/Issued for Construction (IFC) documents to fully understand the scope of work.
- Perform accurate quantity take-offs manually or using software (e.g., AutoCAD, BIM models) to calculate material volumes.
- Build accurate and organized Bills of Quantities (BOQ).
2. Cost Estimation & Pricing
- Calculate total direct and indirect costs, including labor rates, preliminary site expenses, and overheads.
- Establish cost libraries, pricing sheets, and historical cost databases for future reference. [1, 2, 3]
3. Vendor & Subcontractor Management
- Issue Requests for Quotation (RFQs) to suppliers and specialist subcontractors.
- Analyze and compare vendor quotations technically and commercially.
- Negotiate pricing and delivery terms to optimize project costs. [1, 2, 3]
4. Risk Assessment & Value Engineering
- Identify and quantify potential project risks, such as market volatility or site complexities, and prepare risk registers.
- Perform value engineering exercises to propose cost-saving alternatives that maintain quality and functionality. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
5. Bid Preparation & Submission
- Compile and format technical and commercial proposals according to client requirements.
- Ensure all bids strictly comply with company financial targets and industry standards.
- Manage deadlines to ensure prompt tender submissions.
6. Post-Tender & Project Handover
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and technical clarifications with clients and consultants.
- Assist management during contract negotiations.
- Assist the awarded project team and Quantity Surveyors with budget handovers and baseline cost setups.
Key Skills & Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Quantity Surveying.
- Technical Software: Proficiency in MS Excel, AutoCAD, and specialized estimating or scheduling software.
- Contract Knowledge: Understanding of various contract models (e.g., FIDIC).
- Commercial Acumen: Strong mathematical, analytical, and negotiation skills.
