Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator - Fayette County

Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator in this position will report to the Fayette County Headquarters. Under general supervision, employee will operate medium-sized equipment such as Front End Loader, Guardrail or Flail Mower, Tandem or Single Axle Dump Trucks, Snow Plow and Spreaders used in the maintenance and repair of highways. May operate other related highway equipment as training permits. Performs related work as required such as flagging, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, brush cutting, litter pickup, and cleaning equipment. Makes minor mechanical repairs such as changing tires, blades, or filters. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.

• The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• Pay Grade 11H
  Tier 1 hourly rate: $17.5313

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks.
• Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
• Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
• Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
• Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
• Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
• Repair and construct various culvert types.
• Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
• Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
• Clean equipment and workshop.
• Transport fuel to equipment.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.

• Ability to climb high steel structures.
• Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
• Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
• Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: A valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
No Substitutions for the Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
