Description of Work

This position performs a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of bridges, pipes and culverts.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owed fixed and moveable bridges, culverts and pipes within Division 3. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. Recommended must be able to carry and lift up to 100 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs frequently.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 $32,639 - $57,117

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.
  • Experience in the operation of at least one of the following: air compressor, forklift, dump truck, vibrator roller compactor, front end loader, backhoe, tractor trailer, truck mounted crane, lattice crane, rubber tire excavator, tractor with attachment, auger or track excavator, asphalt distributor, asphalt tanker, chip spreader, crawler tractor, motor grader, scraper, track loader, widening machine, asphalt paving machine, track excavator, computer controlled pesticide applicator, paint machine, motor assistance patrol vehicle or tug boat?

Position will require climbing, bending and walking on uneven terrain. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency. Safety toe footwear is required .

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
