American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Float pool position — travelers are assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation, with potential placement on one of several Med/Surg units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision, Orthopedics, or MS/Ortho/Urology

Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation

Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuro (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, palliative care, orthopedics, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg diagnoses such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, and renal failure

Patient ratios range from 1:5–6 depending on unit assignment

Skills utilized across units include wound care, trach care, chest tubes, NGT/PEG tubes, IV starts, central line care, foley care, ostomy care, drains, restraints, and medication administration

Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Primary EMR is Cerner (experience preferred); IV pumps are Plum 360, medication dispensing via Omnicell, monitors are Spacelabs
-
12-hour day and night shifts available (7:00 AM–7:00 PM / 7:00 PM–7:00 AM)

36 hours per week standard, with 48-hour weeks possible

Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month

No on-call requirements

Floating required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)

Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; no self-scheduling

Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (can submit pending with ETA)

Current certifications required: BLS and NIHSS

Minimum 18 months of experience in Med/Surg and/or ICU required
-
Cerner EMR experience required if candidate has strictly ICU background; preferred for all candidates
-
Telemetry interpretation experience is a plus — candidates with tele experience should elaborate on that background
-
Chemo administration certification preferred for candidates interested in the Med/Surg/Oncology unit

At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for placement on the Trauma Surgical unit

SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
-
Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, glucose checks), a charge nurse (rarely takes assignment), receptionist/HUC, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs

Orientation for new travelers includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours of on-unit training; orientation for returning travelers absent 1+ year follows the same structure

First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they meet the minimum experience requirements

Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before being eligible as a traveler (measured from last shift worked to assignment start date)

Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible

Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; holiday scheduling is not contractually guaranteed off in advance

Pre-approved time off requests are subject to blackout dates and manager approval

Scrubs may be any color

Parking is available in the facility's parking deck on levels 2–4 only
