Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Mother Baby / Post Partum position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 2 years of postpartum or L&D experience and the ability to provide couplet care.

Details

  • Work in a 20-bed Mother Baby unit within a hospital setting that also includes 10 L&D beds, 4 OB triage/ED beds, 4 antepartum rooms, and 2 ORs
  • Primary patient population includes postpartum couplets, with exposure to high-risk conditions such as pre-eclampsia, hypertension, magnesium sulfate therapy, and occasional GYN surgical patients (e.g., hysterectomy, ovarian cyst)
  • The facility houses the only Level 3 NICU within a 350-mile radius, serving a broad range of high-risk to low-intervention obstetric patients
  • Patient ratios: Antepartum 1:3, Inactive Labor 1:2, Active Labor 1:1, Postpartum/Couplet Care generally 1:3 (up to 1:4), NICU Feeder/Grower 1:3, Peds up to 1:5
  • 12-hour variable shifts, days (0630–1830) and nights (1830–0630); must be available to work both days and nights throughout the contract, with nights currently in higher demand
  • 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Floating is expected; candidates who can float to at least one of the following are preferred: L&D, NICU, Peds, or PICU
  • Charting system: Epic

Requirements

  • Active RN license in South Dakota or a Compact license currently in hand
  • Required certifications: BLS and NRP
  • Preferred certifications: STABLE, CBC; if L&D trained: ACLS, Inpatient Obstetrics certification, Electronic Fetal Monitoring, or Inpatient Antepartum certification
  • Minimum 2 years of L&D experience or 2 years of Postpartum/GYN experience required
  • Must be able to provide couplet care (postpartum and newborn nursery) and care for GYN surgical patients
  • Proficiency in IV starts, phlebotomy, magnesium sulfate administration, blood administration, and insulin drips required
  • Level 2 nursery experience preferred (24-hour testing, bilirubin management, NAS scoring, late preterm, blood sugar monitoring)
  • If L&D trained: ability to circulate C-sections, provide C-section recovery care, and perform cervical checks
  • Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Two professional references dated within the past year are required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include postpartum and couplet care, newborn nursery support, management of high-risk OB patients, and occasional GYN surgical patient care
  • Unit support includes Nurse Aides, IBCLC lactation nurses, charge nurses, a vascular access team, RT (24/7), OB physician team, anesthesia/CRNA, scrub techs, and a CRN available for additional patient support
  • NICU transfer standards are in place for patients requiring escalation of care
  • 2-day facility and unit orientation
  • Holiday coverage required as needed
