TUTOR IN WRITING FOR CHILDREN

Tutor in Writing for Children (Traditionally Published Authors)

Martin Keaveney Creative Writing (MKCW) works with hundreds of creative writers and literature enthusiasts annually across Ireland and online.

Due to new programme requirements, MKCW is seeking to expand its panel of tutors with professional experience in writing and traditionally publishing books for readers aged 0–18.

Successful applicants will deliver courses focused specifically on writing for children and young readers, including areas such as:

  • Picture Books (0–5)
  • Early Readers
  • Middle Grade Fiction
  • Young Adult Fiction
  • Children's Non-Fiction

Courses may be delivered in person or online, depending on programme requirements.

There is strong potential for further teaching opportunities for exceptional lecturers.

Responsibilities

  • Teach pre-existing MKCW courses in writing for children and young readers
  • Facilitate creative writing workshops for children's literature
  • Provide editorial feedback on student writing submissions
  • Share professional insight on traditional publishing pathways for children’s books
  • Promote courses through MKCW channels where appropriate
  • Undertake related teaching duties as required

Tutors may be required to travel to teaching locations.
Mileage is paid beyond 15 miles of the tutor’s home address.

Courses may also be delivered via Zoom or other online formats.

Essential Requirements

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Proven experience writing and traditionally publishing books for readers aged 0–18
  • Publication with a recognised traditional publisher (trade or educational publisher)
  • Strong knowledge of the children's publishing industry
  • Excellent presentation and teaching skills (in person and online)
  • Excellent writing, reading, and editorial skills
  • Experience teaching or facilitating creative writing workshops
  • Commitment to high standards in teaching
  • Passion for children’s literature and storytelling
  • Willingness to teach students across a range of ages
  • Willingness to work within the MKCW teaching approach
  • Access to transport or public transport where required

Garda Vetting will be required for tutors working with participants under 18.

Desirable

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Creative Writing, Literature, Education, or related field
  • Multiple traditionally published children's titles
  • Experience working with schools, libraries, or youth programmes
  • Public speaking or festival experience
  • Full driving licence
  • Strong IT literacy

Additional Notes

Courses run subject to minimum enrolment numbers.

Tutors may be offered related roles with adults.
Due to the nature of short course bookings, confirmation of teaching may occur up to 24 hours before the course start date.

Remuneration: $31.31 per hour
Strong potential for advancement and additional opportunities depending on experience
