Job Summary

Standard horticultural and grounds keeping practices; the use and maintenance of grounds keeping tools and equipment. Performs a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties and assists in related various construction and landscaping projects.

Responsibilities

  • At the direction of the Director of Physical Plant, maintains and cares for campus grounds.
  • Maintains and cares for the mowing of University grounds with hand and power mowers, edging and weed eating, weeding beds, pruning trees and trimming hedges to promote growth and improve appearance.
  • May apply fertilizers and weed control chemicals as directed by Director of Physical Plant.
  • Connects sprinkling equipment and waters lawns, athletic fields, and flower beds.
  • Adjusts and repairs such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.
  • Inspects flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns for evidence of insects, fungi and other pests and reports to Director of Physical Plant.
  • Collects and disposes of leaves and refuse.
  • During winter, assists in the plowing of snow from sidewalks, driveways, and playgrounds, and spreads sand or salt as needed.
  • Supervises the repair of outdoor facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Physical Plant or his/her designee.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and lead by example.
  • Must be a professional, credible and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible
  • Must be able to lift more than 50-lb. objects; frequent bending, stooping, and walking.
  • Can be exposed to a variety of weather conditions for periods of time.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous manner
  • Other duties as assigned by Vice President of Fiscal Affairs or his/her designee.

  • Experience preferred.
