Valve Technician – Job Responsibilities
A Valve Technician is responsible for inspecting, repairing, testing, and maintaining various types of valves used in industrial systems (oil and gas, power generation, water treatment, chemical plants, etc.). Typical duties include:
Core Responsibilities:
- Inspection and Diagnosis
- Inspect valves (control, relief, ball, gate, butterfly, etc.) for wear, corrosion, or malfunction.
- Identify faults or leaks through visual inspection and pressure testing.
- Document findings and recommend repair or replacement.
- Maintenance and Repair
- Disassemble valves for cleaning, repair, or component replacement.
- Lapping, machining, or refurbishing valve parts as needed.
- Replace seals, gaskets, springs, and other internal components.
- Testing and Calibration
- Perform hydrostatic and pneumatic tests to verify valve integrity.
- Calibrate control valves, actuators, and positioners to manufacturer or client specifications.
- Record test results and prepare service reports.
- Installation and Commissioning
- Install valves and actuators in pipelines or process systems.
- Ensure correct alignment, torque, and sealing during assembly.
- Assist with system startup and functional checks.
- Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain accurate maintenance and service records.
- Follow company safety standards and industry regulations (e.g., API, ASME, OSHA).
- Adhere to quality control procedures and ISO standards where applicable.
- Safety and Teamwork
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work safely in confined spaces, elevated areas, or hazardous environments.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and other technicians.
Job RequirementsEducation:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Technical or vocational certification in mechanical maintenance or industrial technology (preferred).
Experience:
- 1–3 years of experience as a valve technician, mechanical fitter, or similar role.
- Experience with valve overhaul, calibration, and pressure testing (API/ANSI valves preferred).
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of valve types and functions (ball, gate, globe, butterfly, relief, control).
- Familiarity with pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric actuators.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
- Competence with measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
- Basic welding, machining, or lapping skills are an advantage.
