General Function:

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic I performs skilled repair and preventive maintenance on gasoline- and diesel-powered equipment. This position services a wide range of assets including heavy construction equipment, firefighting vehicles, snow removal equipment, and related non-powered attachments and accessories.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide range of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including light-duty fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, snow removal equipment, Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles, trailers, and specialty equipment.
  • Conducts inspections, diagnostics, and repairs involving engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering and suspension components, cooling systems, fuel systems, and electrical systems.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance services such as fluid and filter changes, lubrication, tire services, multi-point inspections, and component condition assessments.
  • Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems, including hydraulic hoses, fittings, pumps, and related components.
  • Performs welding, fabrication, and general mechanical overhauls as required.
  • Performs emergency repairs in the field to restore equipment to safe operating condition.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of inspections, maintenance, and repairs performed.
  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly manner in accordance with safety standards.
  • Participates in snow removal operations and supports emergency response activities as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and maintain appropriate Authority escort and driving privileges.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, rough terrain, and have safe work and driving habits.
  • Must be detailed oriented with strong organizational and basic analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task/work with multiple managers and to act with integrity and professionalism.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, while exercising sound judgement.
  • Disciplined work ethic: Must occasionally work extended hours and is subject to emergency call-backs.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills. Will be required to use computer and/or IPAD for work order system, email, and training.
  • Ability to effectively communicate over a two-way radio, email, phone, and person-to-person.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
  • Ability to write routine reports, work orders, and correspondence.
  • Ability to understand and carry out general instructions in standard situations. Ability to solve problems in standard situations.
  • Ability to work at varying heights off/on ladders, aerial lift, or structures and operate a forklift.
  • May work in inclement weather and have ability to navigate all areas where work is performed and/or assigned.
  • Must pass criminal history background check and maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
  • Must provide own complete set of hand tools.

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Relevant technical or vocational training may be substituted for required experience.

The Airport Vehicle Mechanic will work as part of a team to maintain all Airport owned vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure the safety and comfort of Airport employees, tenants, visitors, and the traveling public. Duties may vary according to job assignment. This position is a standard 1st shift (7:00 AM-3:30 PM).

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

This position is primarily performed in a garage/shop setting but may be required to work outside in varying weather conditions. The position requires frequent movement from one work location to another over uneven or inconsistent surfaces and also involves exposure to noise, vibrations, chemicals, and other contaminants, moving mechanical hazards, and extremes of temperature and weather conditions. Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses; sufficient auditory ability, with or without audio logical devices; able to tolerate exposure to noise levels up to 120 decibels; and capable of being on one’s feet for extended periods of time. Additional physical requirements include stooping, standing, walking, lifting, pushing climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to distinguish colors as required to discern light-gun signals from the Air Traffic Control Tower. This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive.
