Veterinary Assistant

Veterinary Surgery Specialists (VSS) is a brand-new, state-of-the-art specialty surgery practice in Berlin, NJ. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Part-Time Veterinary Assistant to join our team. This role is perfect for someone who is passionate about animal care, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, and wants to gain hands-on experience in a surgical specialty hospital.

Overview

As a Veterinary Assistant, you will work alongside veterinarians, board-certified surgeons, and veterinary technicians to deliver exceptional care to our patients. You will support both the clinical and patient-care sides of the hospital, ensuring the comfort, safety, and well-being of every animal we treat.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians and technicians during patient exams, treatments, radiographs, and surgical procedures.
• Safely and compassionately restrain patients for exams, lab work, and diagnostic procedures.
• Support patient care, including administering medications and fluids under supervision.
• Prepare, clean, and maintain exam rooms, surgical suites, kennels, and treatment areas.
• Monitor patients before and after procedures, ensuring safety and comfort.
• Perform or assist with in-house diagnostics, bloodwork, and lab submissions.
• Maintain and sterilize equipment and ensure workspaces are fully stocked and organized.
• Provide accurate record-keeping, input charges, and support client communication when needed.
• Utilize veterinary terminology effectively in team communications.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming hospital environment that meets health and safety standards.

Experience & Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in a veterinary hospital preferred.
• Veterinary Assistant Certification is advantageous but not required.
• Strong understanding of animal physiology, anatomy, and handling techniques.
• Familiarity with critical care, medication administration, and aseptic techniques is valued.
• Experience with laboratory procedures and diagnostics is a plus.
• Ability to multitask, stay organized, and remain calm under pressure.
• Team player with excellent communication skills and a positive, compassionate attitude.
• Flexible schedule (day/evening shifts, weekends as needed).
• Front desk experience is a plus (appointment scheduling and client communication).

Compensation

• Starting at $18/hour, based on experience and qualifications.
