Job Overview
The Butler County Prosecutor is seeking a caring and passionate professional to serve as a Victim Advocate for the Area Court Division. The role will have an emphasis on providing support to victims and witnesses through the Area Court process. This position is funded by grant money and is contingent on annual receipt of grant funds. Currently the position is funded through September 30, 2026. This office intends to continue to apply for grant funds annually as long as such funding is available, the employee continues to meet performance expectations and the office continues to need the services performed in this position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Build trusting relationships with victims, their family and witnesses of crime and trauma, providing emotional support and stability.
- Inform victims of their rights and ensure compliance with Ohio victim rights laws, including Marsy’s Law.
- Provide an understanding of the criminal justice system, educating the victims and/or witnesses of court proceedings.
- Provide timely updates regarding hearings, case developments and outcomes.
- Accompany victims and/or witnesses and their families to court for scheduled hearings or provide follow-up communication when victims are unable to attend.
- Coordinate and attend meetings between victims, prosecutors, and law enforcement when requested.
- Assist victims with completion of Victim Impact Statements and ensure statements are submitted in accordance with court procedures.
- Provide crisis intervention and emotional support to victims.
- Develop individualized safety plans with victims when safety concerns are present.
- Provide information and assistance regarding civil protection orders, including explaining the process.
- Assess victim needs and connect victims with appropriate community resources.
- Continually update current case records and proceedings, as well as collecting and maintaining statistical data on victims served.
- Attend local events to distribute victim literature and brochures as a means of educating the public.
- Cultivate partnerships with outside agencies as well as those who work within the Butler County Area Court system.
- Attend training conferences and meetings.
- Assist within other divisions of the Prosecutor’s office as needed or requested.
- Any other tasks/duties assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney or Division Chief.
Required Skills:
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office applications including email functionality.
- Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and work well with victims, witnesses, assistant prosecutors, law enforcement, court staff, office employees and neighboring social service agencies.
- Take initiative to complete needed tasks while working independently.
- Ability to maintain an even and pleasant temperament in an environment where there is an assortment of emotions.
- Be able to de-escalate highly emotional situations in a professional and effective manner.
- Strong organizational skills with an ability to listen, ascertain and establish goals and objectives of the division.
Salary is commensurate with experience and the above-mentioned skills
