JOB SUMMARY
The Waste Management Collector is responsible for semi-skilled manual labor involving the collection of trash and refuse.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor
- Collects garbage and trash throughout the town in a safe and efficient manner
- Represents the Town and interacts with the public on a daily basis
- Performs other duties as assigned that relate to Construction and Demolition (C&D) or Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
- Provides assistance to other Divisions within the Department and other Town departments as directed
- Performs other duties as required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:- High school diploma or equivalent and six (6) months prior work experience
- Valid South Carolina Drivers License
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of Division equipment and effective practices and techniques
- Knowledge of department safety practices and techniques
- Knowledge of various department tools and equipment
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form
- Ability to follow directions and complete tasks in a detailed and accurate manner
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.), carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing, or walking for the full workday may also be involved. Employee must have adequate hearing and visual capability in order to perform this job safely. A great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level. Travel, particularly during adverse weather conditions and troublesome road conditions and at times during the evening hours is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment involves continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Work is continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. Employees will be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to natural disasters, emergencies, and Town special events. This position requires “on call” status to support Town efforts as needed.
