Water Skills Coach

Job Summary:
The Water Skills Coach supports aquatic training activities associated with a customer at Camp Pendleton, California. This position assists in delivering water confidence, aquatic conditioning, and maritime skill development training for candidates transitioning from infantry units into the training continuum prior to attending formal combat diver training.
Water Skills Coaches assist in conducting pool-based and open-water training events designed to build swimming proficiency, fin swimming endurance, underwater confidence, and aquatic survivability skills necessary for success in reconnaissance training environments.
This role supports government instructors and the Lead Water Skills Coach during aquatic training evolutions and ensures water-based activities are conducted in accordance with established safety standards, Programs of Instruction (POIs), and operational risk management procedures. Water Skills Coaches operate in physically demanding environments and must maintain the professional judgment, physical capability, and situational awareness necessary to ensure the safe execution of aquatic training events.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in execution of aquatic training events including water confidence drills, fin swimming sessions, underwater tasks, and aquatic endurance conditioning
  • Support pool-based and open-water training evolutions conducted as part of training pipeline preparation
  • Monitor students during aquatic training events to ensure safety and adherence to established training procedures
  • Provide coaching and technical feedback to improve student swimming efficiency, endurance, and water confidence
  • Assist with preparation, inspection, and maintenance of aquatic training equipment including fins, masks, snorkels, and safety gear
  • Support pre-training safety briefings, equipment checks, and risk mitigation procedures
  • Assist in maintaining situational awareness and safety oversight during water-based training activities
  • Coordinate with instructors, safety personnel, and medical support staff during aquatic training operations
  • Respond to water emergencies or distressed swimmers as required
  • Support concurrent or consecutive training cycles that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and extended training days
  • Maintain required certifications, personal readiness standards, and physical capability necessary to safely support aquatic training

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in aquatic training, swim instruction, water rescue, or professional aquatic operations
  • Strong swimming ability including proficiency in long-distance swimming and fin swimming
  • Experience coaching or instructing swimming technique, water confidence skills, or aquatic conditioning
  • Current lifeguard certification or equivalent water rescue certification
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
  • Experience supporting training activities in structured instructional environments
  • Ability to safely supervise participants in aquatic training events
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance
  • Ability to support extended duty days and non-standard work schedules as required by training cycles

Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Prior military service, particularly within reconnaissance, special operations, or maritime units
  • Experience supporting military training programs or DoD operational environments
  • Professional dive certification such as Rescue Diver, Divemaster, or equivalent
  • Experience supporting water confidence or aquatic training associated with military selection pipelines
  • Experience coaching collegiate or professional swimmers
  • Background in competitive swimming, ocean lifeguarding, or endurance swimming
  • Experience assisting with open water training operations
  • Experience working within instructor teams or training cadre

T3i Drug Free Workplace Statement:
