- Reading and Interpreting Blueprints: Studying and understanding technical drawings, sketches, and specifications to plan layouts and procedures.
- Material Preparation: Measuring, cutting, grinding, and cleaning metal surfaces (such as mild steel or carbon steel) to ensure they are ready for the welding process.
- Equipment Setup and Operation: Setting up and operating welding machinery (MIG/GMAW equipment), power tools, and hand tools like angle grinders, calipers, and rulers.
- Welding Operations: Performing manual or semi-automatic welding in various positions (flat, vertical, overhead) to join components accurately.
- Quality Assurance: Inspecting completed welds for accuracy, quality, and flaws to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards (e.g., ASME codes).
- Maintenance: Maintaining welding equipment and tools in proper working order and reporting any malfunctions or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
- Safety Compliance: Consistently following all safety protocols and regulations, including wearing appropriate protective gear such as heat-resistant gloves, safety shoes, and protective masks.
- Material Handling: Operating equipment like cranes or forklifts to move heavy materials as needed during the fabrication process.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in MIG/GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) processes, specifically using CO2 or an argon/CO2 mixture as the shielding gas. Knowledge of other welding techniques (TIG, Stick, FCAW) is often a plus.
- Experience: Previous experience, often a minimum of 1-2 years in plate welding or a similar fabrication role, is usually required.
