Welder : GTAW (TIG) and SMAW

Position: Welder 6G (Stainless Steel / Carbon Steel / Low Alloy / Nickel Alloy – Clad 625)

Experience: Minimum 5 years in Oil & Gas brownfield construction, shutdowns, tie-ins, and revamp works.

Certifications: Valid Welder Qualification Test (WQT) by DNV-GL / TÜV / Bureau Veritas / ClassNK / ABS (or equivalent).

Job Purpose

Perform high-quality welding in accordance with approved WPS/PQRs, project specifications, and codes, using GTAW (TIG) and SMAW (Stick) processes for groove and fillet welds across stainless steel, carbon steel, TMCP, low alloy, and Inconel 625 clad/nickel alloy joints.

Materials, Consumables & Key WPS Details

Stainless Steel (TP304L):

  • · Base: ASTM A312 TP304L / A358 TP304L / A403 WP304L / A182 F304L.
  • · Process: GTAW (root/hot) + SMAW (fill/cap); Positions: ALL; Progression: Uphill.
  • · Filler: ER308L (GTAW), E308L-15 (SMAW); Argon shielding: 99.997% (15–20 LPM), backing purge (≈30 LPM).
  • · Preheat: 10°C minimum (ambient/moisture-free); Interpass: 170°C max; SS tools dedicated; oxygen purge monitoring where specified.
  • Carbon Steel (A106 Gr B / A105 / A234 WPB / API 5L):
  • · Positions: ALL; GTAW without backing; SMAW with backing as per joint.
  • · Filler: ER70S-6 (GTAW), E7018-1 (SMAW).
  • · Preheat: Not required up to 25 mm; for ≥25 mm, preheat ~95°C; Interpass: up to 315°C.
  • · Shielding: Argon 99.997% (≈9–10 CFH for GTAW).

TMCP Carbon Steel (API 5L X60/X65 PSL2):

  • · Position: 5G (uphill); GTAW + SMAW.
  • · Filler: ER80S-Ni1 (GTAW), E8018-C3H4R (SMAW).
  • · Preheat: 100°C minimum; Interpass: 201°C max; PWHT: 610–630°C (≈1 hour/25 mm).
  • Clad 625 / Nickel Alloy Joints (UNS N06625 overlays/cladding):
  • · Base combinations: A671-CC60 (A516-60) EFW + 3.0 mm internal UNS N06625 clad; A420-WPL6 weld + 3.0 mm internal UNS N06625 clad; A350-LF2 CL.300 WN RF serrated + 3.0 mm UNS N06625 overlay.

§ Filler: ERNiCrMo-3 (GTAW), ENiCrMo-3 (SMAW); Positions: ALL; Progression: Uphill.

§ Preheat: 10°C minimum; Interpass: ~150°C; Maintain purging until ≥6.5 mm weld deposit; Use oxygen purge monitor.

Key Responsibilities

  • · Execute welding strictly per the relevant WPS parameters (amps/volts/travel speed/heat input).
  • · Apply GTAW for root and hot passes; SMAW for fill and cap per WPS.
  • · Ensure correct bevel preparation (machining/grinding) and back gouging when required.
  • · Set up and verify shielding/backing gas; maintain purge quality with oxygen monitoring for stainless and clad joints.
  • · Control preheat/interpass temperatures per material WPS.
  • · Perform initial/interpass cleaning (brushing/grinding); use SS-dedicated tools for stainless spools.
  • · Coordinate with QC for VT, dimensional checks, and NDT (PT/MT/RT/UT) as per ITP.
  • · Maintain weld traceability (weld maps, numbering) and consumable control (drying, storage, batch tracking).
  • · Comply with site HSE and PTW; work safely in confined/elevated hot areas typical of brownfield plants.

Qualifications & Certifications

  • · Valid WQT in GTAW + SMAW for 5G/6G positions covering CS, SS, TMCP, and nickel alloy/clad joints.
  • · Third-party certification: DNV-GL / TÜV / Bureau Veritas / ClassNK / ABS (or equivalent).
  • · Ability to read WPS/PQR, isometrics, and weld maps; knowledge of defect prevention and corrective actions.
