This position is accountable for the Pipe and Structures Welding/Fabrication area to meet established production requirements and enhance the capabilities of the business through continuous improvement. This role requires hands-on experience in pipe and structural welding/fabrication in addition to knowledge of ASME B31.3 and AWS D1.1 standards to lead highly skilled trade team members.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position reports to the Pipes and Structures Value Stream Manager. This position leads Hourly employees within area of responsibility with functional, technical and engineering guidance. Responsible for initiating and facilitating the implementation of team building, plant modernization, continuous improvement, welding Technology, and Certified Assembly Manufacturing (CAM) activities at the shop floor level. This is a second shift position with limited immediate direction.
The Supervisor Production Level Ill directs and organizes the activities of ten (10) to fifty (50) Hourly employees to assure that production, engineering and quality requirements are met within utilization, efficiency, cost and schedule.
Manufacturing activities are diverse in nature and level of difficulty which may include both new production and overhaul products. Incumbent provides close daily guidance, expertise and supervision of operations including the machining, welding, fabrication and assembly of standard and developmental products and tooling. This position may also act in a lead-supervisor capacity over operations utilizing large numbers of production employees, automated welding and machining systems and testing facilities. Incumbent may direct second or third-shift operations and coordinate carryover and prioritization efforts between shifts.
The incumbent operates in a dynamic environment that requires independent judgment and problem-solving of a technical nature, as well as ongoing planning, prioritization, coordination, and follow-up to maintain established schedule and capacity utilization. Factors influencing this process are the requirements to establish and monitor production and testing schedules, as well as interpret changing product definition or customer requirements. Incumbent must provide expeditious technical guidance to supervision and Hourly personnel for timely resolution of production, testing or product performance problems and act as key liaison with Project Management, Design Engineering, Quality Engineering and other support organizations. Conditions impacting this position on a daily basis are human relations Issues, material shortages and delays, unanticipated machine or facility downtime and short lead time schedule, design or configuration changes, and frequent requirements to exercise independent technical or engineering problem-solving where significant impact to unit goals as well as company master schedules and customer commitments may result.
Hourly employees receiving direction from incumbent are varied in classification including mechanics, machinists, welders and inspectors. Typically, more than one (1) functional group operating at complex levels of difficulty may be directly or indirectly supervised by incumbent, including highly technical or automated operations.
The primary function of the incumbent is to act as a resource for the timely resolution of unprecedented or undocumented technical or engineering problems related to manufacturing operations. Incumbent provides direction to rework, retest of rejected package components and ancillary equipment. Incumbent provides daily technical expertise and direction and establishes priorities and schedules for Production and develops staffing and expense proposals for assigned areas, as well as auditing and approving departmental expenditures within established levels. Incumbent coordinates and prepares reports and documentation such as departmental Instruction; quality control, part rejection, daily activity and failure analysis reports; and other special reports, as required.
Interpersonal and human relations issues in an environment of stringent time and performance constraints require the incumbent to establish effective rapport and communication with individual Hourly employees and supervisors; and with technical and engineering support personnel in other functions and plant locations. The incumbent provides daily guidance and direction to Hourly personnel to assure that Human Resources practices and decisions in the incumbent's area are within Company policy.
Incumbent maintains close daily interface with all support functions to assure that needed materials, services and technical guidance are provided. Incumbent identifies design and engineering deficiencies; or improper production and test procedures or instructions and resolves or communicates same to engineering personnel with recommendations for resolutions.
The incumbent should have knowledge and experience in the areas of planning, organizing and providing technical leadership to supervision and Hourly employees engaged in production/ fabrication, test, overhaul or developmental manufacturing activities. Advanced formal training or equivalent experience in an engineering or manufacturing discipline and sound knowledge of welding fabrications, applications and manufacturing is required along with excellent problem-solving, communications and human relations skills.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Plan, establish, execute and assure effective operations within assigned area of manufacturing to meet an established schedule and production plan, as well as emergency, late definition or special customer commitments.
Champion efforts in, Welding Technology, Certified Assembly Manufacturing, and Process Improvements.
Build cohesive, cross-trained teams that assume broadly defined roles in running a competitive business at the shop floor level.
Lead less experienced supervisors and Hourly employees in assigned area to assure effective utilization of personnel and facilities.
Provide sound, timely technical and engineering guidance and direction to supervisors and Hourly employees.
Determine needs and coordinate actions required to maintain standards of quality, safety and efficiency in area supervised.
Select, train, Instruct and motivate an effective work force of qualified Salaried and Hourly personnel capable of meeting area goals and objectives. Initiate and facilitate team activities.
Perform assigned duties within guidelines of established Company policy and practice and Company-Union agreements.
Administer the companies plans in hiring and promotion decisions. Ensure a safe work environment exists within assigned area.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
At least 5 years of experience in a related field.
Knowledge of ASME B31.3 and AWS D1.1 standards
Leadership experience in manufacturing.
Effective communication skills (written and verbal).
Ability to lead teams, work with teams, be a team member and possess emotional intelligence to understand individual and team dynamics.
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required
Proficiency in understanding GD&T drawings.
Demonstrates sound understanding of welding procedures.
Experience in GMAW (MIG), DC/AC GTAW (TIG), FCAW (Flux Core), GMAW-P (Pulse MIG), saw, plasma/laser table, lathe, and/or break press operation.
At least 3 years of hands-on manufacturing experience in lieu of a formal education in welding technology.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Leadership experience in welding and fabrication.
Track record of continuous improvement in manufacturing.
Proficiency in Lean Manufacturing and/or Lean Six Sigma.
AWS CWI endorsement or equivalent.
Experience with latest welding, manufacturing and inspection technologies.
Summary Pay Range:
$108,834.00 - $163,252.00Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
