A Youth Services Library Assistant works on a wide range of library tasks involving both public and technical services. The focus of this particular position is youth services (from infants through teens.) The employee will work under the general supervision of the Director to plan, organize, and develop a variety of youth programs and provide reference and readers’ advisory services to youth and parents. Promotion of such services and resources to the community will also be expected. The employee must be familiar with library policies and procedures and be able to work well with the public including children, young adults, and adults demonstrating tact, a positive attitude, and showing creativity and self-direction. Work with community volunteers for youth programs may be involved. Public service involves circulation, reference, telephone contacts, and correspondence. Knowledge of library resources and the ability to direct patrons to them with accuracy and courtesy are essential.
Youth services library assistants are responsible for the accurate completion of library clerical tasks including shelving, filing, shelf reading, and keyboarding. Providing assistance to patrons using library computers as well as individually owned electronic devices such as laptop computers, tablets, and e-readers is also required.
