A brief overview of a 9-1-1 telecommunicator’s responsibilities:

Before firefighters, police officers or EMTs arrive on the scene of an emergency, 9-1-1 telecommunicators are often the first point of contact for callers in crisis. If you have the ability to make quick decisions with confidence, coordinate multiple tasks at once, yet remain calm and professional during emergency situations, a career in 9-1-1 could be a perfect fit.

For 9-1-1 telecommunicators, no two work days are exactly the same. Emergency dispatchers enjoy a fast-paced work environment that offers the opportunity to make a positive difference in the community and help people in need.

Basic requirements for 9-1-1 employment
Candidates for full-time telecommunicator positions must meet the following criteria:

· United States citizen

· At least 18 years of age

· High school diploma or GED (accredited)

· Undergo fingerprinting for a criminal background investigation

· Have not been convicted of a felony or Class A/B misdemeanor

· Pass a drug screen

· Demonstrate proficiency on a typing, skills, and aptitude test (most agencies)

· Complete a personality profile (most agencies)

· Submit personal and professional references, which may focus on your honesty, integrity, and ability to deal with stressful situations and put others first

· Pass a psychological examination

· Pass a polygraph examination (some agencies)

· Military discharge must be honorable, if applicable

Denco 9-1-1 provides a valuable service to both job seekers and participating public safety agencies by offering pre-employment evaluation tools. All public safety agencies in the district have access to the test results, which may be used as a screening tool for applicants based on the individual agency’s parameters. Denco will be offering the opportunity for pre-employment testing during the current and upcoming months. Interested individuals should send an email to schedule testing.
