ABOUT THIS POSITION


In 2025, more than 52 million passengers traveled through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), making it one of the busiest airports in the United States and a key hub in the nation¿s fifth-largest city. PHX is the largest of three airports in the Phoenix Airport System, which also includes Deer Valley and Goodyear airports, operated by the City of Phoenix Aviation Department (AVN). Together, these airports generate an annual economic impact of over $44 billion.

The Aviation Department has a vacancy for an Airfield Maintenance Worker I position. This position performs various construction and maintenance tasks on the airfield and streets of Sky Harbor International Airport as well as Deer Valley and Goodyear Airports. Tasks include asphalt crack sealing, concrete joint sealing, the installation, maintenance, repair of painted or thermoplastic ground markings, general grounds maintenance, setting up of barricades and warning devices to channel traffic around work zones, assisting with concrete and asphalt installation and repair.

This position must be capable of operating small to medium-sized gasoline/diesel powered engine driven equipment. Individual assignments may require the use of skills in a variety of trades or may be specialized in one area.

Work hours: 3rd shift, 10:00 PM - 8:30 AM, Monday thru Thursday.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Familiar with Federal Aviation Administration rules, regulations, and guidelines is preferred.

SALARY


Pay Range: $19,07 to $28.17 per hour.

Hiring Range: $19.07 to $22.08 per hour.

  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain Airfield Operations Area (AOA) driving certification within one (1) year of hire and maintain certification as a condition of continued employment.
  • Working conditions:
    • Must be comfortable climbing ladders.
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
    • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
    • May require working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience with:
    • Airfield maintenance.
    • Crack and joint sealing.
    • Grounds maintenance.
    • Paint striping and ground marking.
    • Chain link fence repair and installation.
    • Working in an airfield environment.
    • Traffic barricade set up and takedown.
    • Public contact and customer service.
    • Concrete and asphalt installation and maintenance.
    • Operating small mechanical and /or power equipment.
