Department Summary:

Michigan Housing is an actively engaged unit within Student Life Auxiliary Services within the Division of Student Life. M Housing serves approximately 11,500 students; 9,100 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate and professional students and their families. Although first-year students are not required to live on campus; historically 96-98% of all new first-year students choose to live on. Currently, the M Housing portfolio consists of 19 residential facilities that include traditional residence halls, apartments, and other living options located in communities on north and central campuses in Ann Arbor. In partnership with Michigan Dining, there are 9 dining halls and 9 retail operations embedded within the residence halls that serve approximately 4 million meals per year. Beginning Fall 2024, M Housing partnered with other units and departments within Student Life to support the residential experience for approximately 25 U-M students on the Marygrove campus, located in Detroit. In Fall 2026, five new residence halls housing 2,300 undergraduate students and a new 822-seat dining facility will open to continue M Housing's strong tradition of providing affordable housing options and services for U-M students. In addition to supporting the academic mission of the University, M Housing creates and sustains diverse learning-centered residential communities that ultimately enhance the residential experience and serve as a guide for their work in support of creating a sense of belonging for students.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director of Residence Education for Student Staff Selection and Training oversees the comprehensive selection, training, and development for live-in resident staff, and provides oversight in hiring hourly student positions in undergraduate, graduate, and professional communities within diverse residential communities and apartments.

Responsibilities*

Position Responsibilities (primary responsibilities and duties expected in this position totaling 100% allocation):

40% Selection of student staff: The Assistant Director coordinates the recruitment, marketing, and selection of a diverse and talented pool of student staff, while working in collaboration with full-time staff in Michigan Housing departments.

• Manages the application, interview, selection, and placement for 450+ undergraduate and graduate resident staff.
• Serves as a liaison with colleagues in Human Resources, Registrar, and Student Life to ensure compliance with university policies and eligibility of student staff each term.
• Collaborates with campus partners in creating pipelines for robust talent management.
• Directs the onboarding and placement process to best serve the unique needs of residential communities.
• Consults with the Housing Operations to review and update hiring paperwork including ResStaff Letter of Appointment (LOAs) and housing contracts.
• Coordinates annual feedback processes for student staff.

40% Training of student staff: In collaboration with campus colleagues, coordinates on-going training and development for student staff to ensure preparation to serve students in their residential communities.

• Develops training outcomes and designs training experiences for student staff this includes in-person, virtual, and asynchronous sessions.
• Creates and maintains an online repository for training materials and resources.
• Coordinates training programs for the start of each term in addition to preparing staff who begin their positions at off-peak times during the academic year.
• Administers and oversees training, assessment and continued training development.

20% Department Leadership and Administration: Collaborates with peers to assess the residential experience and direct training to optimize student experiences.

• Supervises full-time Administrative Assistant and 2 full-time Training Specialists.
• Leads long-range planning and coordination of annual selection and training cycles, ensuring timelines, communication, and implementation remain aligned across multiple concurrent processes.
• Represents Residence Education and Michigan Housing on campus committees and task forces related to student staff selection and training.
• Manages department budgets related to student staff selection and training.
• Provides on-going guidance and support to Residence Education full-time staff on selection and training matters.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

• A Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or a related field.
• Minimum two years of full-time professional experience in a college or university housing and residential life setting or similarly applicable experience.
• Experience with supervision, training and selection, and working with a diverse population.
• Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

Desired Qualifications*

• The ability to communicate and relate effectively with diverse students, staff, and faculty.
• Experience with student conduct, crisis response, living learning communications, educational programming, and working with faculty is desirable.

• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, remain adaptable in a fast-paced environment, and thrive in a student life office responsible for responding to challenging emergent needs and issues.
• Capacity to interact and work with different constituent groups, including students and staff, while navigating conflict and responding to high-level concerns related to wellbeing among groups.
• Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgement while maintaining alignment with departmental priorities and timelines.

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

This position is responsible for a budget up to 10,000 for student staff selection and training purposes.

Working Conditions:

This position requires on-site work.

Some nights and weekends are required.

Physical Requirements:

May need to transport packages of up to fifty pounds to and from various areas in the community. The incumbent is required to frequently travel around campus to engage with campus partners and students.

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2026 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY26-27 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
