Role Summary:


The Assistant News Editor supports the News Editor in overseeing day-to-day news coverage, ensuring that content meets the highest editorial standards across print, digital, and social platforms. The role involves supervising reporters, editing copy, helping plan coverage, and assisting with breaking news. The Assistant News Editor acts as a key point of coordination for the news desk, supporting workflow management and contributing to the planning and commissioning of stories.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Support the News Editor in managing the daily news agenda and newsroom workflow.
  • Edit, proofread, and polish reporters’ copy to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to house style.
  • Assist in assigning stories and guiding reporters on angles, sources, and deadlines.
  • Monitor breaking news and coordinate rapid coverage across platforms.
  • Collaborate with digital, multimedia, and social media teams to optimise content for online audiences.
  • Contribute to story planning, commissioning, and scheduling features or special reports.
  • Uphold editorial standards and ensure content aligns with The National’s style, tone, and values.
  • Provide support in maintaining relationships with contributors, agencies, and external contacts as needed.


Role Requirements:


  • Strong editorial judgment with an eye for newsworthy stories.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge of digital publishing, social media platforms, and multimedia storytelling.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organisational and team collaboration skills.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and consistency in content.
  • Familiarity with SEO, tagging, and online analytics is desirable.
  • 3–5 years of experience in journalism, with hands-on reporting or editorial experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to edit and manage news content for print and digital platforms.
  • Experience in breaking news coverage and newsroom coordination is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to multimedia production and digital content optimisation is an advantage.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
