Barge Maintenance Manager

Job Purpose:

The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and executing the maintenance management of jack-up barges to ensure operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and cost efficiency. The role involves working with the team, optimizing preventive and corrective maintenance programs, to minimize downtime and extend the lifecycle of assets.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural systems on jack-up barges.
  • Plan and supervise corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and breakdown repairs to restore operations in a timely manner.
  • Monitoring and tracking Planned Maintenance System (PMS) of all maintenance activities.
  • Conduct root cause failure analysis (RCFA) on recurring issues and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with Class, Flag State, and international maritime standards (ABS, DNV, IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, etc.).
  • Manage certification, inspection, and surveys required by classification societies, flag authorities, and client requirements.
  • Oversee the maintenance and reliability of safety-critical equipment, including firefighting, lifesaving appliances, navigation systems, and dynamic positioning (if applicable).
  • Preparation and supervise dry-docking and major refit/repair projects, including preparation of technical specifications, vendor selection, and on-site supervision.
  • Coordinate with barge captains, chief engineers, port engineers, port captains and operations managers to align maintenance schedules with project execution and minimize operational disruptions.
  • Control spare parts and consumables inventory, ensuring critical spares availability while optimizing stock levels and costs.
  • Prepare annual maintenance budgets, monitor expenditures, and provide cost forecasts and variance analyses.
  • Review and approve vendor/service provider performance and proposal.
  • Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping of all maintenance activities, including equipment history, inspection reports, and certification status.
  • Lead, train, and mentor onboard and shore-based maintenance personnel, ensuring technical competency, safety awareness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify gaps and recommend improvements to maintenance processes.
  • Support emergency response planning and participate in drills, ensuring equipment reliability during critical situations.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, with demonstrated experience serving as a Chief Engineer
  • Minimum 8–10 years of progressively responsible maintenance experience in offshore or marine industry, with at least 3 years in a managerial/supervisory role on jack-up barges
  • Strong technical knowledge of barge systems, including engines, generators, jacking systems, cranes, ballast systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Familiarity with classification society requirements, maritime safety/environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel offshore or to shipyards when required.
