Job Summary
The Barista is responsible for preparing and serving high‑quality hot and cold beverages (especially specialty coffees), delivering excellent customer service, maintaining cleanliness and operational efficiency, and ensuring consistency in every drink. This role contributes directly to customer satisfaction and the café’s reputation.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Greet and welcome customers in a friendly, professional manner; take orders promptly and accurately.
- Prepare, customize, and serve a variety of beverages, including espresso‑based drinks (e.g. latte, cappuccino, americano), teas, cold brews, etc., following established recipes.
- Operate, clean, and maintain coffee equipment (espresso machine, grinder, brewers) to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
- Steam and froth milk to the correct texture; produce latte art if required.
- Monitor drink quality (taste, presentation, temperature) and ensure consistency across orders.
- Handle cash and card transactions accurately, use POS systems, balance registers, issue change.
- Maintain inventory – restock supplies (coffee beans, milk, syrups, cups, etc.), record wastage, notify management of shortages.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene at the work‑station, including cleaning equipment, wiping surfaces, sanitizing cups and utensils, disposing of waste.
- Adhere to food safety and health regulations; follow hygiene, sanitation, and safety procedures.
- Assist in opening/closing duties (setting up equipment at shift start, shutting down, cleaning, restocking, etc.).
- Provide excellent customer service – respond to inquiries about menu, make recommendations, accommodate special requests (e.g. non‑dairy milks, sugar‑free, etc.).
- Work efficiently during busy periods; multitask and prioritize to minimize wait times while maintaining quality.
- Upsell or promote additional items (such as pastries, specialty drinks, seasonal offers) where appropriate.
- Collaborate with coworkers and management; communicate well to ensure smooth operation.
- Participate in any training programs to improve coffee knowledge, customer service, or operational skills.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong customer‑service skills: friendly, patient, attentive, good communication.
- Good knowledge of coffee and beverage preparation – different coffee types, brewing methods, milk steaming, etc.
- Attention to detail – consistency in drink quality, presentation, recipe adherence.
- Multitasking and time‑management skills – able to handle multiple orders simultaneously, especially during peak times.
- Cleanliness and hygiene consciousness.
- Basic numeracy skills – handling cash/card transactions, making change.
- Teamwork – ability to work well with others, assist where needed, communicate.
- Adaptability and flexibility – open to feedback, able to adjust to menu changes or busy flows.
- Physical stamina – standing for extended periods, lifting moderate weights, working with hot equipment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Previous experience as a barista or in a café / food & beverage environment is often preferred.
- Certification in food hygiene or safety could be an advantage.
- Any formal barista training is a plus (e.g. coffee‑brewing courses, latte art, etc.).
Working Conditions
- Shift work including mornings, evenings, weekends, possibly public holidays.
- Fast‑paced environment.
- Exposure to high temps (steam, hot liquids).
- Standing for long durations, frequent movement.
