Behavioral Support Specialist

Position Description:

Behavioral Support Specialists (BSS) facilitate and support the clients in the community to ensure the sustainability of the ageing and disabled population. Their primary role is to assess, analyze, and develop behavior intervention plans to promote positive behavior and improve the overall quality of life for their clients by providing direct individual counseling and case management. Heritage NW Consulting provides services in the Clark and Cowlitz County geographical area.

This role involves regular travel throughout Clark and Cowlitz Counties to meet clients in their environments, which may include private homes, apartments, independent housing, adult family homes (AFHs), assisted living facilities (ALFs), skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), hospitals, and other residential or medical settings.

Duties:

Assessment and Analysis:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify and analyze behavioral challenges and their underlying causes.

Behavior Intervention Planning:

  • Develop individualized behavior intervention plans based on assessment findings and in consultation with the client, their family, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify target behaviors and set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals.
  • Design strategies and interventions to modify or replace problem behaviors with functional alternative behaviors.

Implementation and Monitoring:

  • Implement behavior intervention plans, including teaching and reinforcing alternative behaviors, utilizing positive reinforcement.
  • Train and support caregivers, teachers, and other professionals in implementing behavior management techniques and strategies.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions through ongoing data collection and analysis.
  • Make necessary adjustments to the behavior intervention plan based on progress or changing needs.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including psychologists, therapists, teachers, and parents, to ensure consistent implementation of behavior support strategies.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, families, and other stakeholders to provide feedback, recommendations, and progress updates.
  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and professional development activities.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including behavior assessments, intervention plans, progress notes, and reports.
  • Prepare written reports summarizing assessment findings, intervention strategies, progress, and recommendations.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and maintain confidentiality regarding client information.

Professional Development:

  • Stay informed about current research, best practices, and advances in behavior analysis.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as attending workshops, conferences, and training programs.

Work Environment & Flexibility:
This hybrid position includes a flexible schedule after the initial onboarding period which would be 8:45am to 5:15pm, combining work in the community, in the office, and at home.

Disclaimer: A major perk of this position is the flexibility to create your own schedule after the initial training period. You’ll have the freedom to work from home, in the field visiting clients, and from the office as needed. However, during the first 90 days, the schedule is structured and requires availability in the office and in the field from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. This ensures proper onboarding, training, and support as you get started in your role.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or a closely related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including SharePoint, Excel, and Outlook
  • Strong self-management and time management skills
  • Culturally responsive and inclusive, with demonstrated ability to engage effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences
  • Expertise in de-escalation techniques, with a calm and empathetic approach
  • Maintains professional boundaries and ethical standards, with a clear understanding of role clarity in client interactions
