Job Description:

The Nebraska Talking Book and Braille Service is a free braille and audiobook library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical or perceptual disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page. We are a part of the National Library Service (NLS), which empowers all Americans to read.

Under general supervision, the Book Circulation Technician will provide a variety of detail-oriented, time-consuming technical support activities for our department, such as: inspection, cleaning, maintenance, storage, and circulation of talking book cartridges; management of stacks and shelving; using the library’s computer system to circulate materials and perform inventory; and inspection, maintenance, inventory, and storage of talking book equipment.


Duties:

  • Provide technical support in order to circulate talking book cartridges and equipment to borrowers.
  • Inspect, maintain, and store incoming talking book cartridges.
  • Open and inspect material to verify completeness and operating condition before distribution and after return.
  • Daily interaction with TBBS staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain talking book equipment in accordance with federal guidelines.
  • Review talking book recordings for compliance with National Library Service specifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements/ Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Coursework/training in administrative/office support functions, procedures, and methods including the operation of personal computers and office equipment; or areas related to the programs and functions of the employing agency. OR Experience in customer service or public contact; or applying criteria/regulations; and/or performing administrative/office/secretarial support work including use of personal computers and office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional library experience or library-related coursework.
  • Completed college-level course work in English, speech, audio engineering, or broadcasting.
  • Two years of related work experience in digital recording and editing. Experience with SoundForge and/or other audio production software highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of library operations and interest in library service to individuals with print disabilities.
  • General knowledge of the organizational structure, mission, and function of the National Library Service of the Library of Congress, the Nebraska Library Commission, and the Talking Book and Braille Service.
  • Ability to relate well to volunteers and staff members.
  • Adept technology skills, including experience with Windows and Linux operating systems, as well as with operating digital recording equipment and software.
  • Communication skills, including proficiency in communicating face-to-face, through email, and over the phone.
  • Time management skills, including demonstrating responsibility and accountability.
  • Ability to perform tasks accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to summarize technical data into reports.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow detailed mechanical instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regards to library records.
  • Ability to tolerate periods of standing, sitting, stooping, and crouching, as well as the ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to routinely push, pull, carry, or lifting up to 20 pounds.

Hiring Specs:

  • $17.254 hourly
  • Full time permanent position, Monday through Friday, 8 to 5.
