The Business Writer is responsible for researching, designing, writing, editing, publishing, and maintaining a variety of business support documentation. Documentation deliverables primarily include procedures, process maps, process guides, and system manuals. Documentation may be used by business teams as reference material or by business teams responsible for developing and delivering training on a given subject.
This position is a key point of contact for project teams and business teams to provide assistance researching internal business team impacts, identifying potential pain points or risks, developing business solutions to help mitigate potential risks or prevent errors, recommending best practices based on lessons learned, clarifying complex topics using business-friendly language, organizing and structuring content for usability, and providing overall technical writing expertise.
Essential Functions
  • Performs initial, independent research of the subject to ensure Subject Matter Expert (SME) resource time is used effectively.
  • Identifies business impacts across the organization to ensure processes and procedures provide accurate guidance to primary and secondary audiences.
  • Assesses and understands audience needs, including defining appropriate type, scope, and level of detail required.
  • Defines scope, objectives, deliverables, and timeline of each documentation project to set expectations with SMEs and other project resources (as applicable).
  • Drives adherence to these expectations to ensure documentation is developed and published accurately and timely.
  • Facilitates documentation development discussions, demos, or job shadowing sessions with SMEs to collect relevant information. SMEs may represent project teams, business users, systems developers, or a combination of these roles.
  • Uses active listening, probing, and reflective speaking skills to ensure key points and complexities are addressed by the SMEs and appropriately meet client needs.
  • Clarifies complex or technical content into clear, non-technical information for business team audiences.
  • Structures organize, and formats content to ensure end users can quickly access and identify information when needed.
  • Adheres to documentation standards, styles, and publication standards using existing tools and templates. Making improvement recommendations on these as needed to support changing business needs.
  • Participates in peer review and editing to support consistency of style, tone, and accuracy of content across the technical writing team.
  • Supports the development of business solutions, participates in special projects, assists with team administrative duties, or performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Technical Writing, Process Improvement, or a related field
  • Two years’ relevant work experience
  • Ability to learn new tools and processes quickly
  • Exceptional skill in creating grammatically correct text, and an ability to write accurately, succinctly, and with minimal need for editing/proofing
  • Some experience in creating single-sourced documentation (conditional text) to create output in more than one format (for example, PDF, HTML, Web).
  • Some experience in all aspects of planning, designing, implementing, testing, and delivering a documentation project.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work independently as well as being a contributing member of a cohesive development team
  • Ability to recognize and adapt to changing requirements, schedule changes, and any other challenges that might affect a project
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as but not limited to; computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to concentrate, talk and hear. This role is regularly required to type, reach with hands and arms, sit for long periods of time, read, write, listen, verbally communicate, present information, respond to questions, problem solve, concentrate and tolerated stress. Many duties will be done while sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
