The Pharmacy Technician assists in the technical functions of the practice of pharmacy, enabling the pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical care to the patient. An integral part of the pharmacy team, the technician transcribes prescriptions to the pharmacy dispensing system, bills insurance, packages, and labels medications, assists with inventory control, and provides exceptional customer service to our patients. (Unless specified each function is applicable to both certified pharmacy technicians and pharmacy technician trainee).

B.. Key Working Relationships: Pharmacists, other technicians and pharmacy support staff, pharmacy central billing staff, nurses, other clinic and hospital staff

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- A. Greets and assists patients/customers in person and on the phone in a professional and confidential manner
- B. Communicates effectively with colleagues and customers alike, being a good listener and adjusting style as needed
- C. Represents MercyOne Pharmacies in a courteous, friendly, and caring manner
- D. Performs duties with flexibility, adapting to changing schedules and needs of the customers, prioritizing work load accordingly
- E. Operates cash register accurately, including cash, credit card, in store charges and payments on account
- F. Assists with all aspects of inventory control: ordering, receiving, stocking, returning, and additional drug inventory control duties, including checking pharmacy stock shelves for outdated drugs and assisting with annual inventory counts of all products stocked in pharmacy including prescription, non-prescription, and supplies with a focus on stewardship
- G. Assists with invoice reconciliation and coding for finance
- H. Ensures that pharmacists are providing all patient counseling, consultation, and any other activities that involve professional judgment
- I. Files prescriptions or other paperwork, stocks bottles and vials and performs other clerical duties as necessary or requested
- J. Collects accurate patient demographic, allergy and medication data from patients and caregivers
- K. Utilizes pharmacy dispensing software to accurately input patient and third party information, and process new and refill prescriptions following safety procedures to ensure pharmacist involvement in any process that would involve professional judgment.
- L. Packages and labels prescriptions for final verification of pharmacist in an organized and highly accurate manner
- M. Contacts prescribers to obtain prescription refill authorization
- N. Accepts prescription refill authorizations communicated to the pharmacy by a prescriber or the prescriber's representative.
- O. Certified Pharmacy Technicians: At the discretion of the supervising pharmacist, and after receiving appropriate training, certified Pharmacy technicians may accept new prescription drug orders or medication orders communicated by phone to the pharmacy by a prescriber or the prescriber's agent.
- P. Contacts 3rd party payers or physician offices as appropriate to resolve third party prescription payment issues (including prior authorization, step therapy, processing questions etc)
- Q. Actively participates in quality, safety, and problem solving activities with other pharmacy staff and hospital/clinic departments.
- R. Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested by pharmacists, supervisors or managers
- S. Follows all Federal and State laws regulating the practice of pharmacy and the duties allowed to pharmacy technicians.
- T. Maintains current registration status with Iowa Board of Pharmacy, including notification to the board of any changes in technician name, address, or pharmacy employment status.
- U. Successfully completes and maintains certification with an NCCA-accredited pharmacy technician certification program.
- V. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.
- W. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
- X. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.

- Z. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required
Preferred: 1. Completion of Pharmacy technician training course and/or Certification B. Certification and Registration Required: 1. Following accepting position, registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Technician Trainee or Certified Pharmacy Technician is required prior to commencement of employment per IA BOP Rules 657-3.3. 2. Pharmacy Technician Certification. National certification must be acquired and maintained from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or the National Healthcareer Association prior to the expiration date of a Pharmacy Technician in Training registration. OR 3. Registration: Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist-Intern per Board of Pharmacy rules: “Pharmacist-intern” or “intern” means a person enrolled in a college of pharmacy or actively pursuing a pharmacy degree, or as otherwise provided by the board, who is registered with the board for the purpose of obtaining instruction in the practice of pharmacy from a preceptor pursuant to Iowa Code section 155A.6. “Pharmacist-intern” includes a graduate of an approved college of pharmacy, or a foreign graduate who has established educational equivalency pursuant to the requirements of rule 657— 4.7(155A), who is registered with the board for the purpose of obtaining practical experience as a requirement for licensure as a pharmacist in Iowa. “Pharmacist-intern” may include an individual participating in a residency or fellowship program in Iowa, whether or not the individual is licensed as a pharmacist in another state
