The Bethel Trial Court seeks a highly dedicated and detailed individual to represent the mission of the Alaska Court System as a Clerk of Court 4 (SR 18). The incumbent will plan, implement, and monitor all non-judicial activities of the court which will include direct management and supervision of the Chief Deputy Clerk and Court Case Managers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Clerk of Court is responsible for leading and managing all functions of the court’s clerk office, including the processing of criminal, civil, small claims, minor offense, probate, and juvenile cases. This position ensures efficient case flow management, accurate recordkeeping, effective jury coordination, in-court support, front counter operations, and the proper handling of warrants and court funds.

The Clerk works closely with judges and the Area Court Administrator to implement policies, review and apply legal and procedural changes, and promote the efficient administration of justice. The role includes full supervisory responsibilities, including hiring, scheduling, training, performance evaluation, and compliance with administrative and personnel rules.

This position requires strong leadership, attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and a commitment to high standards of public service. Regular communication with court staff, training coordination, and participation in ongoing education and policy implementation are essential.

This role oversees court facility and equipment needs, ensuring a safe and functional workplace through coordination with the ACA, Facilities, and Court Security. It includes inventory control, budget preparation, and addressing safety concerns. The position also supervises financial staff, manages fund distribution, and ensures compliance with reporting requirements for trust accounts, petty cash, and unclaimed property.

Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices, including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and progressive discipline.

Court and Caseflow Management

Knowledge of court operations, statutes, rules of procedure, and case management practices.

Ability to analyze caseflow and implement methods to improve efficiency.

Administrative & Procedural Oversight

Skill in applying statutes, rules, and policies to daily operations.

Ability to adapt procedures to new legal requirements and ensure consistency with statewide and district standards.

Communication & Customer Service

Ability to communicate effectively with staff, judicial officers, attorneys, law enforcement, and the public.

Skill in resolving complaints, grievances, and sensitive issues with professionalism and fairness.

Collaboration & Training

Ability to work cooperatively with an Area Court Administrator and Trial Court Trainer to implement training and onboarding plans.

Commitment to ensuring consistent training aligned with statewide and district standards.

The Work Schedule

Full-time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND four years of administrative level work experience, of which two years must be at the level equivalent to a Clerk of Court 3 or Court Supervisor 4 with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer.

OR

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in business administration, public administration, criminal justice, or a closely related field AND two years of administrative level work experience. The required work experience is met by service such as a Clerk of Court 3 or Court Supervisor 4 with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer.
