Position Overview
We are a mid-size trucking company seeking a hands-on Controller / Bookkeeper to manage day-to-day accounting while providing high-level financial oversight. This role is ideal for someone who can operate both strategically and tactically - handling transactional work while guiding financial decisions that impact profitability and growth.
You’ll play a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, improving processes, and supporting operational leadership in a fast-moving environment.
Key Responsibilities
Daily & Transactional Accounting
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, including invoicing, collections, and vendor payments
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and fuel cards
- Process payroll and ensure accuracy of driver pay, settlements, and deductions
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate coding of transactions
- Handle month-end and year-end close processes
Financial Management & Reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Monitor cash flow and manage working capital
- Develop and maintain budgets and forecasts
- Analyze financial performance, including cost per mile, fuel costs, maintenance, and driver expenses
- Provide insights and recommendations to improve profitability
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements
- Manage sales/use tax, IFTA reporting, and other transportation-related filings
- Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting procedures
- Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and tax professionals
Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee accounting software and integrations (TMS, fuel systems, ELD data, etc.)
- Identify inefficiencies and implement streamlined financial processes
- Support automation and reporting improvements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of accounting experience; transportation or trucking experience strongly preferred
- Proven ability to handle both bookkeeping and financial leadership responsibilities
- Strong understanding of cost accounting and operational metrics (cost per mile, utilization, etc.)
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar) and advanced Excel skills
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and analytical abilities

Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
