Controller / Bookkeeper (Transportation & Logistics)

Position Overview

We are a mid-size trucking company seeking a hands-on Controller / Bookkeeper to manage day-to-day accounting while providing high-level financial oversight. This role is ideal for someone who can operate both strategically and tactically - handling transactional work while guiding financial decisions that impact profitability and growth.

You’ll play a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, improving processes, and supporting operational leadership in a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

Daily & Transactional Accounting

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, including invoicing, collections, and vendor payments
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and fuel cards
  • Process payroll and ensure accuracy of driver pay, settlements, and deductions
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate coding of transactions
  • Handle month-end and year-end close processes

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Monitor cash flow and manage working capital
  • Develop and maintain budgets and forecasts
  • Analyze financial performance, including cost per mile, fuel costs, maintenance, and driver expenses
  • Provide insights and recommendations to improve profitability

Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements
  • Manage sales/use tax, IFTA reporting, and other transportation-related filings
  • Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting procedures
  • Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and tax professionals

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Oversee accounting software and integrations (TMS, fuel systems, ELD data, etc.)
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement streamlined financial processes
  • Support automation and reporting improvements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of accounting experience; transportation or trucking experience strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to handle both bookkeeping and financial leadership responsibilities
  • Strong understanding of cost accounting and operational metrics (cost per mile, utilization, etc.)
  • Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar) and advanced Excel skills
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational and analytical abilities

Pay: $55,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
