The Copywriter is a member of the Student Communications team within Digital Learning at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This position is primarily responsible for writing clear and engaging student-focused communications—especially email and text messages—that support enrollment and student success. The Copywriter collaborates closely with colleagues in Student Outreach and Engagement, Marketing, and Program Partnerships to ensure that communications are timely, accurate, and aligned with the needs of online learners. While the focus is on digital messaging, the role may also include writing for websites, landing pages, and print materials. The Copywriter is expected to leverage data and audience insights to inform messaging strategies and improve content effectiveness.


Content Development and Writing

  • Write clear, concise, and engaging content tailored to prospective, admitted, and enrolled online students.
  • Translate complex concepts (e.g., admissions processes, academic policies) into reader-friendly communications.
  • Develop content for email, SMS, app pushes, admissions operations, automated enrollment and success coach outreach, and other student-facing avenues.
  • Maintain consistency in tone, language, and voice across all communications.

Campaign and Project Collaboration

  • Partner with Student Communications, Marketing, and Outreach team members to develop messaging plans and content.
  • Attend planning meetings and apply communication goals and strategies across assigned projects.
  • Revise copy based on stakeholder feedback, usability testing, and performance metrics.

Editing and Proofing

  • Edit and proofread content developed by internal partners for accuracy, clarity, tone, and grammar.
  • Review existing and new automated or templated communications to ensure high-quality writing standards are met.

Message Optimization

  • Use A/B testing results, engagement data, and audience insights to iterate and improve message performance.
  • Propose content variations to enhance clarity, increase response rates, or better support student outcomes.

Brand Voice and Tone Stewardship

  • Serve as a resource for applying and evolving the voice and tone of student communications.
  • Help document brand messaging guidelines and train others as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Information Sciences
  • Experience :
  • 3+ years of experience writing or editing content in a communications, marketing, or editorial role.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Skill in writing persuasive, concise, and audience-appropriate content.
  • Ability to write for digital, including email, SMS, web, and social platforms.
  • Ability to translate complex or technical information into clear, student-friendly language.
  • Knowledge of brand tone and voice and messaging best practices.
  • Skill in editing and proofreading to ensure high levels of accuracy and polish.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of accessibility and inclusivity in communications.
  • Knowledge of communication practices in higher education or student services.
  • Experience writing content in CRM, CMS, or marketing automation platforms.
  • Skill in using data and analytics to inform message testing and performance improvements.
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices and UX writing principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience:
  • Experience working in a higher education setting, especially supporting online or adult learners.
  • Experience developing content in support of recruitment or student success efforts.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hiring Range: Targeting $60-$72k, depending on experience
  • UT market range: MR 09
