Description of Work

This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center located in Vanceboro, NC with an offender population of 850, and approximately 360 staff. Employees in this class carry a caseload of offender and meet with them semi-monthly or as frequently as needed, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems, and making recommendations on classification and control actions to the classification committee. Case managers may have mental health offenders on their caseload which requires additional time to manage. In addition to regular case management duties, each case manager will also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, education, or recreation; substance abuse programs, community volunteers, offender library and special projects involving offender art show/writing contests, volunteer banquets, as well as transition planning and coordinating. Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community. Case managers are also often required to interact with community organizations in their performance of duties.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range: 37,377 - 65,408

Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of prisons.

Working knowledge of techniques of supportive counseling and interviewing. Ability to gather and evaluate information concerning an individual's past experience, training attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities.

Working knowledge of correctional programs.

Ability to communicate effective, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
