Description of Work

Salary Range: $37,377 - 65,408

This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Avery County, NC. Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution is a medium custody male facility.

Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Employees also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates, such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordinating. Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Applicants must now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

• Working knowledge of techniques of supportive counseling and interviewing.

Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community.

Key Duties Include:

• Staying up to date on policies and procedures of prisons
• Maintaining a case load of offenders providing supportive counseling
• Interview offenders to gather and evaluate information concerning their past experience, training attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities
• Working with individuals from the community and other public and private programs on services that may be available for offenders
• Supervising various programs within the framework of policies and procedures
• Effectively communicate both orally and in writing

The salary grade for this position is NC07 . State employees are encouraged to

apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
