Description of Work

Salary Range: $39,244 - $68,679

This position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a medium-custody correctional facility. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Other responsibilities of this position include the following:

• Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written.
• Defending oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
• Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area.
• Demonstrating and instructing offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
• Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
• Training, observing, evaluating, and supervising effectively subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.
• Accounting for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs.
• Monitoring off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather and road conditions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

• Knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.
• Knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits .

The salary grade for this position is NC08 . State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.

Pender Correctional Institution is located in Burgaw, North Carolina and houses up to 768 male offenders in a medium custody facility.

Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work
