COSMETIC CHEMIST
JOB PURPOSE: The Cosmetic Chemist is responsible to assist in developing new formulas and testing relating to body, skin and hair care products. Work to develop products from concept to launch throughout the year.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for initiating project concepts, developing objectives, planning, assigning priorities, and completing multiple projects under minimal supervision.
  • Independently investigate/resolve research problems/scale up issues.
  • Communicate with customers on technical aspects as well as regulatory and performance.
  • Utilize and follow relevant legal requirements, regulations, and product development standards.
  • Determine and perform appropriate cost reductions (raw materials).
  • Scale-up of approved formulations, to include identification of critical process variables.
  • Some troubleshooting of production issues and address batch variations.
  • Set product specifications and write compounding procedures.
  • Some supervision and coordinating pilot batches.
  • Provide paperwork for new formulas and new raw materials for operations.
  • Provide specifications and other information to QC to receive and test new ingredients and finished goods.
  • Test stabilities and monitor testing statuses.
  • Research product formulations and properties and interactions of raw materials.
  • Vendor research for raw materials.
  • Interpret results of laboratory findings and assess risks involved in new products and communicate findings to sales and upper management.
  • Remain up to date and current on trends in the retail market and trends on formulations materials, ingredients, etc.
  • Initiate formal training of Lab Assistant I and Entry Level with help from Director.
  • Maintain current technical awareness in hair/skin care technology.
  • Learn and optimize skills utilizing equipment recognized in the cosmetic industry as acceptable for obtaining data for pre-clinical testing of formulations,
  • Conduct instrumental product performance testing using the Rheometer, Particle Size Analyzer, Polarized/Visible light Microscope (when available), and other related equipment. This includes the calibration and balancing of the instrument.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Clean climate controlled laboratory space

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Associate level position

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 2-3 years or some advanced degree/training

EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry desired, or some advanced degree/training

Focus on Cosmetic chemistry desired

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Closely follows PPE requirements within laboratory setting
  • Ability to independently use a computer and use online platforms such as SharePoint for information sharing
  • Advanced formulation skills and technical knowledge
  • Moderate to thorough understanding of FDA regulations and cGMP’s
  • Drives creative research and strategic recommendations for product development.
  • Able to translate consumer insights into actionable recommendations to achieve exceptional consumer satisfaction.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, in a fast-paced environment under short deadlines, tolerance for business ambiguity; the ability to thrive under quickly changing situations; adaptable.
  • Methodological mindset to test new ideas and work towards valid results.
  • Proven ability to manage external suppliers and ensure top value and performance for the organization.
  • Self-motivated and able to operate independently, as well as work effectively with others.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • High level of initiative, innovation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally & at all levels within the organization including senior leadership.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and high level of accuracy & organization
  • Some demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in an administrative role
  • Experience with understanding and working with information management systems required
  • Experience with Cosmetri preferred but not required
  • Ability to stay organized and relay detail oriented information in an appropriate manner
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs required
  • Excel, Word, Outlook

  • Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and arms to reach for items and / or materials
  • Employee is occasionally required to lift office products and supplies, up to 35 pounds.
