Data Collector (Temporary)

Job Description

The Department of Child, Family, & Population Health Nursing has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary hourly Data Collector position.

Working in a research team under the leadership of the Principal Investigator and the Project Director, the Data Collector will be responsible for performing health assessments as a part of a new NIH-funded randomized controlled trial (RCT). The RCT will leverage an established treatment program to target childhood obesity (vs. control) in 240 prepubertal girls who are at risk for earlier pubertal onset based on BMI percentile 85th and low family income, both factors linked to earlier pubertal onset. Findings will inform the value and optimal timing of such interventions, including whether implementation in the prepubertal period may be most impactful due to the combined benefits of weight loss along with a reduction in risk for earlier pubertal onset and its sequelae.

The Data Collector will perform in-lab and in-home health assessments in young girls accompanied by their primary caregivers. These assessments will be conducted in accordance with an IRB-approved research protocol. The Data Collector will receive training to perform the health assessments. The health assessments will entail standardized data collection activities in areas, including, but not limited to, anthropometrics, blood pressure, health behaviors/status, and pediatric venipuncture, including blood processing and sample preparation for shipment and freezer storage. The health assessments will occur at multiple times throughout the study, including before and after the intervention and at multiple follow-up time points. The health assessments will last between 1-3 hours and may include travel to the study family’s home. The Data Collector will also manage the study appointments, study visit preparations, communications with study families and vendors, and do limited data management and data entry tasks, as well as other related miscellaneous support and troubleshooting tasks.

This role will be responsive to the volume of health assessments that are scheduled each week and will not have a predictable schedule. The number of hours will typically be between 0-20 hours/week and will not exceed 20 hours/week on average.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform high quality in-lab and in-home health assessments repeated over time in a sample of young girls.

• Perform support tasks related to the preparations for the health assessments.

• Perform support tasks related to the accurate collection and management of the data.

• Perform support tasks related to the proper care and management of the study equipment and supplies.

• Perform support tasks related to the scheduling, tracking, and retention of study families.

Perform health assessments (80%)

• Perform in-lab and in-home health assessments in young girls, including data collection activities in areas, including, but not limited to, anthropometrics, blood pressure, health behaviors/status, and pediatric venipuncture, including blood processing and sample preparation for shipment and freezer storage.

• Perform all required data processing and documentation associated with the health assessments.

Perform support activities related to the health assessments (20%):

• Perform preparations related to the health assessments, including preparing needed supplies, setting up space, etc.

• Perform quality assurance tasks related to the accurate collection, processing, recording, and storage of all components of the data collection, including limited data management and data entry tasks as well as other related miscellaneous support tasks to ensure data quality.

• Perform maintenance tasks related to the proper care of the study equipment, including cleaning, proper storage, etc.

• Perform tasks related to managing/confirming study appointments, communicating with the study team, study families, and vendors, tracking families, and contributing to overall efforts to support and retain families.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in a health sciences field relevant to the study (e.g., nursing, pre-med, public health,
  health psychology, epidemiology) and at least two years of related work experience

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Additional Qualifications

• A current phlebotomy license in Washington State and at least two years of related work experience performing pediatric venipunctures as well as blood processing involving the use of a centrifuge and aliquoting.

• A current driver’s license in Washington State and the ability to drive in Seattle and the surrounding areas to conduct health assessments in the homes of the study families.

• Experience working with families/children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

• Experience implementing human subjects data collection protocols involving health-focused assessments and the manipulation of biological specimens.

• Excellent problem-solving and organization skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and team-based skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience performing health assessments in the home.

• Previous experience implementing tools for the assessment of metabolic conditions.

• Previous experience using platforms such as REDCap and SharePoint.

• General interest in working with diverse families in areas of health and health disparities.

Working Conditions

• Work hours will vary and will include weekends, holidays, and hours outside of regular business hours to accommodate the schedules of the study families.

• Work will be conducted both in a research space on campus and outside the office in the homes of the study families as needed.

• Health assessments will generally (but not always) be scheduled in the morning.

• Must be able to carry health and technical equipment required for the data collection (approximately 30 lbs.).

• Must be able to drive by car to home study visits as needed.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

$22.81 hourly
