What is Database Administrator?

The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance management of critical SQL Server and Oracle relational database management systems (RDBMS).

This role ensures database availability, integrity, security, and optimal performance in a large-scale production environment. The position requires hands-on expertise in High Availability (HA), Disaster Recovery (DR), replication techniques, clustering services, and database security best practices.

What Database Administrator Does - MMBL?

Database Implementation & HA/DR Management

• Implement and administer High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions such as Always On, Availability Groups, clustering, RAC, log shipping, mirroring, and Data Guard.
• Ensure maximum uptime and data integrity across SQL Server and Oracle environments.
• Configure robust user access controls, roles, and permissions to safeguard sensitive data.

Performance Monitoring & Optimization

• Monitor database performance using tools such as SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Profiler, and Enterprise Manager.
• Identify bottlenecks, optimize slow-running queries and indexes, and perform capacity planning.
• Stay updated on emerging security threats and apply patches and updates as required.

Backup, Recovery & Maintenance

• Manage database patching, backup strategies, and recovery procedures.
• Create, modify, and optimize SQL Server Agent jobs and maintenance plans.
• Ensure proper implementation of replication techniques and database synchronization.

Automation & Continuous Improvement

• Develop and maintain scripts (e.g., PowerShell, T-SQL) to automate routine administrative tasks.
• Continuously improve database performance, efficiency, and operational stability.

What are we looking for and what does it take to be Database Administrator?

Technical Expertise

• Proficiency in SQL Server (2012, 2016, 2022) and Oracle databases.
• Strong knowledge of database security tools and concepts including encryption, data masking, and access control.
• Hands-on experience with HA/DR solutions and replication technologies (Always On, Mirroring, Data Guard, RAC).
• Familiarity with SQL Server tools such as SSMS and SQL Profiler.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for resolving performance issues.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 2–3 years of experience in database administration within a large-scale environment.
• Relevant certifications such as Azure Database Administrator Associate, OCA, or OCP are preferred.
