Dental Assistant/Expanded Functions Dental Assistant

Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

Position Summary
Expanded Function Dental Assistant with experience providing chairside clinical support, performing Maryland-approved expanded functions under direct supervision of a licensed dentist, and maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant dental office. Skilled in assisting with restorative procedures, taking radiographs, and ensuring patient comfort. Recently completed a one-month deep cleaning and organization project of the dental office to improve infection control, workflow efficiency, and OSHA compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Expanded Function Clinical Duties (Under Direct Supervision of a Licensed Dentist)

  • Place and remove matrix bands, wedges, and retraction cord.
  • Take digital impressions for dental appliances and restorations.
  • Assist with stainless steel crown preparation and fitting.
  • Provide oral hygiene instructions and post-treatment care instructions to patients.
  • Perform duties approved by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners for Expanded Function Dental Assistants.

General Dental Assisting Duties

  • Assist the dentist chairside during examinations, restorative procedures, and surgeries.
  • Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays).
  • Prepare patients for dental procedures and monitor patient comfort.
  • Record treatment notes and update patient charts.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain proper infection control protocols according to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
  • Maintain operatory equipment and prepare treatment rooms.
  • Manage dental materials and clinical supplies inventory.
  • Provide excellent patient communication and support throughout appointments.

Office Maintenance & Infection Control

  • Once-month deep cleaning and organization of the dental office, including:
  • Full sterilization and disinfection of operatories and clinical areas.
  • Reorganization of instruments, supply storage, and sterilization area.
  • Disposal of expired materials and outdated supplies.
  • Implementation of improved infection control and sanitation procedures.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of dental equipment and cabinetry to maintain OSHA compliance and improve workflow.

Work Environment
Dental office setting working under direct supervision of a licensed dentist while assisting with patient care and performing expanded intraoral procedures permitted under Maryland regulations.

Pay: $22.00 - $29.00 per hour
